International Tree Climbing Day 2026

Today was the 23rd International Tree Climbing Day – as initially founded by Cube volunteers in 2003 ( see previous histories here : https://duo.irational.org/international_tree_climbing_day/ )

Kayle and Lady Lucy were up and at ’em as they were at the first year, along with me, Kathy Hinde, Tom Bugs, Ali Jones and others. It’s some kind of thing to have grown and aged along with these trees over the years.

It was a “bracing day” – fairly cold with the occasional strong gusts of wind, in contrast to yesterday’s more conventional sunny beauty, when a beautiful day was had inside the Cube for the glorious Michael Hurley Tribute night, Under The Proposal Tree, with warm evocation of his spirit and songs and links to building and people, along with old friendly faces and ex-volunteers like Rod and Ben and Miranda, Marko, Ruth, Rozi, Racheal and Joff all present, as well as mint tea poured by Esther and Annabel and Snoozie in hand painted pinafores. Rozi’s playing of an answerphone message from Michael over the PA between songs, and “DJ Miss Fishguard” (Sam Leyden) playing a specially made 7″ dub plate from a cassette recording of him made in the bar in 2012 were pure magic, as was Mary Hampton’s live popping popcorn accompaniment, heating up at just the right moment!

But, back to today and onwards and upwards – here’s some 40 views of our liberation of the horizontal . . .
