Decacentric Cabaret of Curiosities

Many moons ago the stars fell and glittered down on a little square building in the heart of Bristol town. As shimmering showers fell from above as pipe dreams burst forth from below the Cube was conceived and, like the workers and artists that enter its doors, lived out its life in a turn of successes, failures, emptiness and glorious fullnesses.

This little microplex with a big heart and an even greater history now reaches the grand old age of ten. Amongst a weekend filled to brim with birthday delights there will be a Cabaret of Curiosities.

And performing at said Cabaret will be:

Thomas Truax
‘Bequilingly bizarre’ maverick musician

Boys and Dance (BAD)
Local heroes of male motion continue their quest to get men dancing

Mr Dennis Teeth

The Suitcase Circus
Object Madness, manipulated into marvellous animation by Oli Townsend

Tuesday Laveau

Victor Llewellyn
Stand-up from Bristol’s Desperate Men Theatre Company

Ms Ziegfeld returns just days before, in a whirlwind of hyper-active excitement, from her first season out with the circus, Mr Paradise has been trekking the dusty plains of libraries and pound-shops for jokes.

We’ll be starting the night with the decacentric mayhem of ten ten-second acts and some circusy sorcery!

It’s on Saturday the 25th of October and it costs £10

Dress up and stay out to dance.

We’re only in it for the money

Hi chums,

Well as documented previously I can’t always get to Orchestra these days as I’m rehearsing with my beat combo, talking of which we’re playing Mr. Wolf’s this Thursday:
Suzuki Boom Boom

But without me they have been very very busy, doing plenty of Bluescreen, a street party in Bishopston, and plenty of other random things I have forgotten about.
Probably best of all was the rather excellent Frank Zappa night at The Cube where the plucky souls, well I tell you what just watch the clip and find out for yourself:

It was a great night, Ale and Bel put a lot of effort into finding old clips of Zappa, and a few favourites too. Top night.

Right ho, must dash.

Big Love, Richie ParadiseRichie Paradise

Filmmakers of Bristol, read on…

From BFMF2008 HQ..
“On the weekend of 14/15th June, the Bristol Filmmakers Festival 2008
comes to the Watershed and the Arnolfini, an event which gathers
together and celebrates the independent film community in the city.

Organised by three local film exhibition and network outfits:
Cineformation, Bluescreen and the Misfit Collective –
BFMF2008 will be screening a variety of the independent film work
created in the city, somewell-funded, some barely funded and some that
come in under a tenner.

The weekend will feature a host of special screenings and provide the
chance for independent filmmakers to meet, swap ideas and knowledge.

More information will be released closer to the event, but we are
currently calling out to independent filmmakers in the city to send
in their films so that we can select the strongest programme to screen.

The criteria is that the films must be submitted on DVD along with the
submission form that can be obtained by emailing bfmf2008@yahoo.com –
also the address to direct any questions.
The deadline is Monday 26th May, and films should be sent to:
BFMF2008, C/o The Misfit Rising, 82 Colston St, Bristol BS1 5BB.

We are also inviting filmmakers to submit material to the Sweded Classics
section of the Festival. Following on from Michel Gondry’s feature film
Be Kind Rewind, we are looking for ‘sweded’ films, where a classic popular
feature film or extract is refilmed with DIY inspiration and resources
(and at much shorter length). Can you swede the whole of Terminator in 6
minutes? There is a later deadline for Sweded Classics: Saturday 7th June
at the above address.”

Also there will be a BLUESCREEN special at the Festival on Saturday 14th June. As usual
with Bluescreen, you bring your films on the day and they are screened there
and then. At BFMF2008, if you want to drop your film into the Bluescreen
programme, please take them to the Watershed Box Office drop point between
10am and 12 noon on Saturday 14th. They will be screened on a first-come,
first-screened basis.

————————————————–

This month’s bluescreen at the Cube (28/05), is proud to present the premiere of ‘SHAMBALA’.
The 3O minute documentary from The Small Storytellers, which presents a window into British festival culture, that asks what our idea of Paradise might be and what are we trying to escape from? More at http://www.smallstorytellers.com/
And of course we’ll have the usual pick n mix of film shorts to follow.
