Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving had us all joining in last night while he scrambled around his microphone stand and stomped about the stage. Unexpected by me he was accompanied by francois, george, viktor and an intensely concentrating tom bugs. Conducting by means of nods and leaps.

That was a good experience, energising, inspiring a lot of CD, and best of all tape, buying.
Listening to Cave Days and Moments on this sunny, hungover saturday.

We attempted a bit of a cube after-dance, facilitated by handbags. Now we realise that dancing round handbags isn’t an anti-theft activity but more a focal point to worship one’s handbag (to have somewhere to look other then the bemused non dancers wavering round the edges of the room).

Tape at Venn

Eyes closed in the front row- those faded velvet cinema seats, everyman thrones, were perfect for quiet and complete absorption. A plugged-in acoustic guitar, a laptop, and a not easily identified instrument were on stage with three men: two standing, the guitarist sitting. The latter provided melody while digital insect noises landed or took flight at the command of his companions. Although tranquil, the players provided an undulating subtext that swung from unsettling to deeply comforting. My thoughts flurried at first but eventually left my mind still and under direction of the music. Thoughts as clear cut as glitches now forgotten- for me, a sure sign of peace.

Cafe Kino Venn hub

After my radio show on Friday morning, I went to Café Kino with Shereene. I probably ordered a raspberry lemonade- that tends to be my tipple of choice there. The breakfast bar stools were full so we took a couple in front of the fireplace and chatted about the show. Around us various other Venners were munching and quaffing and gassing. Kino had become a hub, a place where the vibrations of the festival brought us all together to exchange, share and inform before shaking us apart again, dispersing us amongst various gigs. Kino was a place we were contained and became if not a solid mass then at least a liquid. As well as being an important communications intersection, Kino vastly improved the diets of many Venn workers- the delicious food stoked our engines and prepared us for the next leg of our various journeys while we let off steam.

I have been waiting for Kino for years. I have always needed a café where I can write, think, feel unhurried and generally treat like a room in my own home. A couple of establishments have approached this but never fully arrived. Kino is the place. The first time I walked in there I knew. For one thing, people I like and trust run the joint. It’s important to trust the people who are preparing your food and drink and I don’t just mean from a Food Hygiene Certificate point of view. I want to trust the choice of ingredients, the preparation, the whole life of the meal from ground to gut. And with Kino I do. They make proper happy food, infusing joy to eating. And yet it isn’t just the food that makes the place. The coffee is cheap which is like an open invitation and because you don’t feel as if you are buying your time and seat there it’s a prime place to hang out. I’m bound to see people to chat with or I can chose to hide away in the basement which is light and spacious but snug too. In fact I like the place so much I get nervous for it. I don’t want to think about it not being there. I don’t even like writing that sentence down. Forget I ever did.

Cubist poem

the cube is as mysterious as its power to awaken truth
the cube is smooth except for an air vent and openings for plugs and cables
the cube is a product with no discernable placement
the cube is comprehended
the cube is a work of art

the cube is open for business
the cube is currently functional
the cube is being sold on style and quality
the cube is the sum of the areas of all its 6 surfaces
the cube is the next big thing

the cube is an imagination game – and more – that holds a secret you are dared not to reveal
the cube is a quiet fanless machine cooled by convection
the cube is a lot of fun to play around with
the cube is a stereoscopic back
the cube is closer
the cube is free

the cube is called above and corresponds to the magician
the cube is a nice piece of furniture and you can add other cube components
the cube is called a quadrirectangual tetrahedron
the cube is 50mhz faster
the cube is downward and to the left
the cube is made up of 3 identical pyramids
the cube is composed of 12 coils
the cube is staging a comeback
the cube is headed for demise
the cube is now possible
the cube is ready

the cube is like most complicated things in life
the cube is 75kgs of seasoned hardwood logs and comes in a polyproplene bag that is 60cm x 50cm x 60cm in dimension and fits through normal gateways
the cube is not solvable with a ruler and a compass
the cube is transparent

the cube is placed on a grey rug on a blue floor
the cube is now the place for project managers to find diversions from the stress of the modern workplace
the cube is slightly s t r e t c h
the cube is completed and mixed
the cube is being sliced parallel
the cube is sleeping

the cube is one of the three classic unsolved problems of antiquity
the cube is just a new and unique design statement
the cube is always built in the same place
the cube is mapped to infinitely many different points on the plane
the cube is cute though

the cube is designed to whisk away heat
the cube is equal to the buoyant force
the cube is super cool
the cube is fear

the cube is subdivided into a network of 134 million smaller cubes roughly one million light years on a side
the cube is also available as linked cubes on multiple analysis
the cube is approximately 4x4x4 inches
the cube is designed to fit in that niche
the cube is one cool machine
the cube is down until further notice
the cube is beavered
the cube is preserved
the cube is back
the cube is dead
the cube is you

the cube is now finished

The Sun is not a sphere but a cube

“The Sun is not a sphere — it is a cube. The cube (sun) tumbles and gyrates upon its central point. This tumbling is so rapid that it creates the illusion that the cube (sun) seems to be a sphere. In fact, all extant stars in the cosmos are cubes tumbling and gyrating so rapidly that they appear to be spheres.” — Amitakh Stanford

It’s not all junkets and jollity in the heady world of improvised music, O no my brothers and sisters. Hard work for Orchestra Cube in these times playing spreading the good Cube word at the Sunrise Celebration in Somerset.

In attendance, Orchestra members Ale, Belinda, Hugh, Simone and me, fire jugglers Bryn and Merlyn, and rock god Hugh’s groupies Jess and Naomi. Cube Kyra and Cube Mike came too with the Invisible Circus, demonic phantasmagoria of urban decay, existential dread and hula-hoop twirling.

Played up the Saturday morning sun with an acoustic set at the Tiny Tea Tent. Much instrument swapping. Cruelly upstaged by a duo of eight-year-old folkies. The black fire of hatred flashed in the Orchestra’s eyes as it vowed revenge.

That afternoon, combative Orchestra set out to crack open the permanent funk-rock workout that was the jamming tent and feast on the goo inside. An hour or more of Hugh’s ecstatic E-bowed noise hovering like the angel of death over some fine kit drumming from Ale, pierced by weird violin/trumpet space harmonies by Bel and Simone. The Orchestra exited in triumph, flashing its crocodile grin, trailing cowed, yelping funk-rockers in its wake.

On Sunday morning Ale, Hugh and I enjoyed a very satisfying long, loose set driven by Ale’s rococo guitar in the Avalon Rising tent; site of mystical illumination and ley lines spangling into the distance. Various collaborators contributed flamenco, blues and gospel. The Orchestra felt itself becoming one with the spirit of Peter Gabriel.

Later, a set in the bar, partly conducted by Ale. On one side, a trance sound system, on the other a drumming circle, our sounds collided with these other sounds and returned to us deformed by the impact. Sometimes playing with the sounds around us, sometimes against them, we began in trepidation but built up to a loud twenty-minute finale with the Orchestra piling noises on my fragile little riff, a shiny black ant carrying six times its body weight. The Orchestra laughed its devil-may-care laugh and went forth in courage, humour, cunning and fortitude.

My one-man side projects included learning to dowse, comparison-chanting with the Hare Krishnas, earth worshippers, Vedic people and gong ceremonialists, and playing Beefheart balalaika for food.

Though Simone and I are safely home, other Orchestra members are still in the field. Till their safe return, our prayers are with them.

Chicks On Speed physically violated by security promotors and sponsors at a festival in southern Spain

It sounds like the chicks really have something to complain about.

CHICKS ON SPEED PHYSICALLY VIOLATED BY SECURITY PROMOTERS AND
SPONSORS AT A FESTIVAL IN SOUTHERN SPAIN

Date: Tue, 13 Jun 2006 17:10:02 +0200 (MEST)
From: Chicks on Speed Records Newsletter

Dear Everyone,

We wanted to let you all know, we had one of the worst experiences of
our 10 year musical career on Saturday night, we were physically
violated and dragged off stage by security, Ortiz Padillo Promoters and
commercial sponsors at Oxigena Festival, near Cordova, in Southern
Spain. We were denied our right to perform at the festival as
contractedand our fees were not honoured. It was clear that the public attendance
of the festival was extremely low and the promoters wouldn´t allow us
toplay for this reason, so they could claim insurance on the premise, of
acancelled headlining act. The promoters and Sponsors falsely claimed
that ³the band is late” as we entered the stage at 1.25am, 5 minutes
prior to the planned stage time of 1.30am as contracted.

Photo documentation has been taken away from us, our camera was smashed
and memory card stolen.

We want to expose these criminal acts and the organisations responsible
for abusing and robing artists through their business practices and the
unethical networks of festivals and concert promoters. It´s clearly a
case of abuse against women, destruction of personal property, breach
of contract and assault.

We´re pretty freaked out & scared by what we experienced. It would be
really good to have your support in any way, the organizers were trying
to make quick cash from the festival. Look out for scammers that are
abusing musicians and swindling young people looking to have a fun
evening.

KEEP MUSIC ABOUT ART & CULTURE & A WILD FUN TIME TO BE TOGETHER & NOT A
MEANS FOR HORRIBLE MEN TO MAKE PILES MONEY.

I’m Being Goodbye

How to end a song ( in only 5 easy minutes ) . . .

Thank you and goodnight

Fantastic to see my dream of various and varied postings come to fruition. I’m going to take this opportunity to step down from doing such frequent postings – I will still post now and then ( about tonight even if I’m Good ), but basically I’ll be mostly moderating from now on so You The Cube as a whole can document its/your self.

I may well get my own blog to bang on about myself and my computers, though right now personally I feel pretty old and weary of all the photo taking and filming and note making – though that could probably just be the hay fever and it’s attendant drugs talking – plus the aftermath of Venn doc-ing overload . . .

By the way, this is how I saw that the Venn festival saw it’s self over the all. . .

Highlight : Tony Allen

[ mine was Oren Marshall he made me cry, in a good way. With runner up prize to Men Diamler / the whole inspired Sunday programming ]

Lowlight : Cobra Killer – the story goes they didn’t like their hotel, they didn’t like their replacement hotel, they didn’t like the dimensions of an on-stage table – all things apprently perfectly provided, as requested in the rider. The story continues they didn’t feel like turning up to perform and didn’t like to let the promoters know causing many many fans to wait and wait, and wait, before finally leaving and possibly not coming back for the brilliant, but under-subscribed final day. Snakes.

[ My lowlight was also what wasn’t there, just for me that is on my own personal venn adventure, due to being monopresent – specifically Team Brick and Vialka and Bass Clef and the first Chris Corsano set, oh and all of St George’s, but I enjoyed great things at all times in all else wheres. Can’t quiet belive it’s 2 weeks later – I’m nearly recovered. ]

Meanwhile, to add to Zulieka’s mighty fine first post, here’s a pic of jobbing Blackout tech, Rod & Jem, in front of the curtains at Future Cinema . . .

Well, we turned up expecting to improvise, bringing a few bits of our own costume incase nothing fitted. And then we met the costume ladies! Here’s what they gave us:
