He gets about a bit . . .

Just heard my computer’s . . .

be friend me

. . . gone and set up one of these myspace thingies.

I’ve tried a few times to sign up myself but keep getting a “invalid input” error (?)

Spotted Venn Festival up there – maybe The Cube as an entity should cave in and join in this thing too?

( though following LL’s flickr comments, I think under it’s new ownership it’s probably an even more contentious network, no? )

Anyway, the computer will be performing at The Cube as part of QuWack next month, and while we’re plugging please take note of the soon come Movieoke . . .

wouldn't this be better with a border?

. . . days away ( i.e. this Saturday ).

( I know Richie’s already mentioned it, but I think this new post will knock his off the bottom of this page )

See you there ?

Not especially Cube related, but if you like a little bit of c’n’p then like me you might like this link which links to pdf versions of Niel McMillian’s excellent series of ( mainly hip hop angled ) articles about taking and cutting away . . .

‘nother late result : Tollgate 2, ‘tween time . . . not so much

Like the first Tollgate update, this one’s a little late, well a lot late actually – mainly because I got knocked out by this monster cold/flu that you probably have had too, and that might well have come from hanging about in cold carparks . . . anyway . . .

For me this was even better than the first launch – on a personal note I was happier with my performance for Max . . .

Happier

. . . which weirdly most people seemed to think I was performing live on the night despite the stuttering edits which could only have been pre-recorded.

The actual work that Max was introducing consisted of more numerous but shorter pieces compared to the last launch that I thought did a good job of keeping up the interest of everyone braving the harsh conditions for the stunning view . . .

view two

. . . and Blackout supplied audio-visuals, along with the great tea and cakes care of Local Kid.

First up was Adam Faraday‘s audio accompanied slideshow combining documentary images he had made of the previous week’s installation along with those sent in by the public to the Blackout arts website. My photos of the photos projected onto the thing that the original photos were of . . .

Additional Screening

. . . can’t really capture what it, or indeed what any of the evening’s projections that were really like, but take it from me, if you were there, they were like . . . a pretty pretty good.

A tech glitch meant that they were accidentally shown in black and white – which actually didn’t look half bad, and many people assumed was in fact intentional, even when they were immediately repeated again in full colour.

Next up was the highlight of the whole Tollgate experience for me – a live performance by VI, whose mesmerising oscilloscope visuals . . .

VI & I

. . . have been praised before on this blog, but to experience the enveloping synchronised sound and vision on this scale was simply astounding. Top notch.

This was followed by Joe McGee‘s tiny made huge installation involving various bugs and ultra-violet maggots teaming about the building . . .

tiny maid hugh

. . . which of course will soon cease to exist.

All topped off by Jem Nobel’s “I dream a Tower” Installation . . .

Noble Dreams

. . . which stayed up looping out into the city for the next 7 nights along with the accompanying soundtrack which was broadcast on FM Radio.

Like the week before the early finish meant there was time to get to The Cube, and again a chance to see an international artist brought to the auditorium by an outside gallery.

However the, for me, unexpected sublime of Vladmaster care of The Here Gallery the previous week wasn’t matched by Miguel Pereira who was brought by Arnolfini as part of their annual InBetween Time festival.

Despite the quite admirable idea of the piece involving various local performance faces, such as scene stealing Tom Marshman, Elaine Kordys, Dyslogic, and Kari Norman who did nothing to disgrace themselves ( and also unavoidably present was a certain IBT stalwart notable round these parts for his jaw-droppingly inappropriate christening of The Janitor at an earlier festival ), the actual performance of Miguel Pereira was just lacklustre, even bearing in mind it seemed to be self-consicously based on clichés about clichés that was no get out clause in my book.

I’m sad to report, in my humble opinion of course, it was probably the poorest thing to grace The Cube stage thus far – though strangely I think the documentary photos look a bit better than those of the more engaging Tollgate work . . .

oh dear

Hey ho, the bar was still packed . . .

look at me I'm smoking marlboro lights

. . . present and correct were bohemian beings and DJ tag team Asteroth and Wyllie . . .

I love their work

. . . so it wasn’t all bad.

In the weeks, yes weeks – I’m sorry, that have passed since then there’s been a couple of by all accounts joyful celebrations at The Cube – the 30th birthday of Kayle Brandon and the wedding of Bruce and Louise . . . congratulations all, and please anyone, everyone, post up pics and postulations if you have them . . .

WE DON’T SUCK……………….

WE BLOW

Hey baby how yew doin’? Once again The Cube Orchestra was Maestro less, perhaps his guest appearance with Sculpture last week did him in I don’t know. Anyhow good ol’ Bel lead from the front
Bel leads from the front, can't you read? Not the The

A huge turnout, including one newbie, Will (seen here with relative newbie Adam the Wolfman) Will newbie with Adam on the flo' A grand total of 11 under Bel’s leadership, Didn’t she do well ladies and gentlemen? A round of applause paleeese
In case your wondering where I am in the pics above, well it’s kinda difficult to take good pictures of everyone with me in them to, but fear not, I’m still as handsome as ever.
We started off just damn well going for it, and then moved over to the invisible conductor thing, which worked quite well, though for my tastes the 3 geetars were just tooo darn loud (somethings never change), so a little mention of bringing it down a bit and more sparcity and we had a nice ballsy Bel number again, with tips of the hat to New Orleans. Nice.

Barry turned up sins instrument, so he improvised barry YES THAT IS A BUCKET HE’S PLAYING SEE barreell barry. He also used a tin and a paintbrush, though he may have been decorating as well I’m not sure.
I rarely do marking (only joking OFSTED) but top marks to the old school like Mark, Bel, Marcus and
Hugh (with his fancy new bass, though not in this pic) Hugh, without swanky new bass who went at it with some aplomb. Simone on violin also went for it with some verve, a spirit that is to be encouraged. Right on.

Fun for all S'Fun Now how often can that be said of an Improv musical experience? (hey I’m kinda being facetious here ‘cus we took some time before we really got going but you’re good people, you now where I’m coming from).

Till next time Pearl Maple Soprano Snare, as endorsed by Richie Paradise Richie Paradise

Latest events at last

Late again, but here’s my perspective on recent(ish) Cube related events . . .

I was in The Cube for filming of the first pre-recorded version of Max Blackout for the Tollgate House project, with Adam and Ali ( a.k.a. Max’s sinister shadow ( see below )) trying to figure out how to light the greenscreen . . .

green ? blue ? pink ?

. . . which though it looks pink here ( it’s yet to be covered with green fabric from the fabulous fabricland ) it is often also called bluescreen ( you know what I mean ).

A few days later on the same stage was another Orchestra Cube rehearsal . . .

Orchestra Cube

. . . with no Richie, and so no drums this time. Taking the cue from the missing beat Peter lead several excises relating to rhythm for the usually more melodically minded – including directing one of the more musically conventional members ( Marcus ) to attack his keys as if slapping his hands in mud. Nice.

Also appealing to me was the suggestion for communal sighs and laughs at ( and as ) certain points in the improvised composition – could have just sounded silly, but the maestro’s conviction somehow always wins through.

No practice this week, by the way, but there is a performance by Orchestra Cube splinter group Sculpture at the soon-to-be-sadly-shut Seymour’s Family Club ( whose website almost hits the same stylistic heady heights of Fabricland’s ). That’s today, Wednesday ( this week ).

Thursday ( last week ) saw the first Tollgate House launch – this was a number of films and installations projected on the-soon-to-be-demolished tallest building in Bristol, all introduced by Max Blackout . . .

Tollgater

. . . and climaxing with Rod Maclachlan’s ‘It Is All Around Us’ installation which has been running every night this week since, with audio accompaniment on 87.7 FM.

The second launch is this Thursday, starting 6.45. The work looks amazing on the huge scale, and just the view from on top of the carpark, where the audience views it from, is amazing too . . .

What Max can see

. . . but do wrap up warm, if you’re tempted to come along this Thursday, as it’s a might nippy up there.

As the Tollgate launch event finished at 9pm, there was still time for me to make it to The Cube to catch the end of The Here Shop Bottle Orchestra . . .

Here, tha blows

. . . making innovative use of natural Cube contents to great effect, and accompanied by the also be-bottled audience. They were supporting main act Vladmaster, who was doing something with the tiny, which I thought was a nice contrast to Tollgate’s massive scale – but equally immersive.

Basically she ( she being Vladimir, who comes from Portland, Oregon, along with her suitcase full of Viewmastersâ„¢ to hand out, and who was at one point sporting antlers . . .

now I view the master

)

. . . makes original, and quite beautiful, Viewmasterâ„¢ discs, with accompanying audio, to tell stories. It’s a really great idea to do this as a performance in a cinema . . .

room with the views

. . . where all the individuals are communally submerged in their own private worlds. Sounds great too when the audio track goes “ding!” to signal the next slide and everyone releases their little levers together in a big collective clatter.

Thank you Here shop.

Thaere Shop.

( And Here is where Vladmaster originals are available to purchase, I believe. )

And so finally to The Books review . . .

. . . as you probably know from the extensive promotion, The Books, with The Clogs, are on a UK tour, the second date of which was a pre-sold sell out at The Cube.

The Clogs played first featuring some virtuosic violin playing, and a nice bit of bassoon – which there’s not nearly enough of these days in my opinion . . .

Drum & Bassoon ( and guitar and violin )

. . . they were then joined by The Books for their final couple of numbers . . .

clogs and books

. . . though I thought they became a little bit, ahem, clogged, when they all played together and preferred them playing as separate groups where I felt they really excelled. Also excellent was DJ Lovewig in the packed bar between band outings . . .

Sometimes I feel like throwing my hands up in the air . . . I know I can count on you . . .

The Books’ set was wonderful – the combination of samples and live instruments of their recordings brought to life by smart use of synchronised projected archive footage, much of it the source of the original samples . . .

more Mormons

. . . that image is from the first track which featured Mormons taking off and putting on their hats. Again, might sound simple, or even silly but in execution becomes marvellous. A different working of the Mormon hat footage by The Books is also on a DVD project that I’ve got some work on too . . . info here for the interested.

Anyway, enough of the “me-mail” ( a word I heard on Word of Mouth for verging on spam self-aggrandisement – an episode which also featured a certain ( but not that certain ) Tom Betts talking about computers ) Anyway, Ok, I’m off . . . fer now.
