Cubistry

I will be starting to post an accurate history of the Cube/Bristol Arts Centre/Arts Centre Cinema. I have been looking into this from the start of the Microplex in 1998. Bascically there will be two main sections or histories.

The first will be based on archive material, anecdote, memories and history prior to when the Cube team took over in 1998.

The second will be a history of the Cube, its inception and early development which should also be open for anyones contribution.

I will start this by talking to the original founders Julian Holman, Jack Davies, Kevan Dennis and Graeme Hogg to see where they are now and how they feel about the whole enterprise. Other people will come into the picture in chronological order until we reach now I guess.

Arts Centre Adventure

So today , whilst cutting mounts, cleaning glass with lighter fuel, and nailing nails at AM’s and Francois house. I found this.
ARTS CENTRE ADVENTURE by Harold Joliffe
read more about him here
Anyhow heres the thing I wanna tell you about this book.
In the forward there is a great reference to the people who built the theatre here. ANybody know what date ?
I once life modelled for one of the ORIGINAL volunteers. who had much to say.
It’s a nice little quote about enthusiasts.
The book is actually about the history of Swindon’s art centres but holds great ressonance for this building which has it’s origins in keeping the faith and still does today.

“In the arts the most precious commodities are enthusiasm and drive. Many remarkable projects have been sparked off by one man or a small group of enthusiasts.” Two communities are noted, those of Birmingham and Bristol…
And it is a story of enthusiasm and drive the work of a group of ehthusiasts which was to give opportunity to many thousands and pleasure to an infinetly greater number.”

I dunno, It’s a nice little quote which sums up the very work ethic we have here, and the reasons we do things.

Tolls

Do they live under bridges?

I saw many this Christmas. I was with all my family except Brenda, who was away with the faries, at Kids J’s place in Surry.

I got charged for smoking my i-pod on a train but have since found out that I am still earning royalties from my contribution to Toto’s Africa. I wrote the drum parts. It keeps me in good cash during times of famine (not Africa’s!)

Big up to Roots M – who has a new album ready to go. The sound of English Gangster Roots.

Save it up for me.

Peel Biog+

Ah i’m in..
Thought i’d share my current reading, as i agree with Mr H, the dire state of tv over xmas..
Was given a biog of John Peel (by Mick Wall,Orion books} by a friend for my birthday, .. quite a good and of course emotional read, but best thing about it, is the list of all the festive fifties since 1976! Wow!
Also recommend Paul Auster- ‘The New York Trilogy’, which i finished recently..
good reading..

let's hope it's a good one

TV on the wain you know

Well, I’m feeling under the weather and excuse me for lashing out at a super soft target, but, after being laid up in bed and subjecting myself to ‘The 100 Greatest TV Treats of 2004’ and ‘Winners and Losers 2004’ I wish I’d taken the advice of the 2004 January Cube programme and taped up my telly and chucked it out.

screening calls

If you follow the “winners and losers” link above you’ll spot the write up ends with

” . . . which some viewers may find upsetting.”

Count me in.

The torrent of shameful shite picked for the year was sickening, {big-}brethren.

For me it was a demonstration of a seemingly never ending gush of this cheap tv sewage that creates, and maintains, a horrendous appetite for titillation through completely unnecessary and abhorrent humiliation of others, and so ultimately the viewer.

Shows the wonders that us sentient beings are capable of, eh?

I suggest searching out bittorrent and downloading one of the unmentioned tv highlights, like ‘Power of Nightmares’ or ‘Oz’, or continue ploughing through your long lost Buffies or something, or . . . or whatever, frankly, I’ve lost the will to watch or suggest.

So, happily, I say good riddance to 2004. A year where idiots on all scales, from innocuous buffoons such as George Bush, Joe Pasquale or the-boyfriend-of-someone-who-was-in-a-reality-show-the-year-before to frighteningly empowered mindless bullies like Gordon Ramsey or Chris Moyles were all glorified as “winners”, and meanwhile, we are all losers – through the loss of the unmentioned John Peel, seemingly now ( in my blind fury ) the only public figure who was ever genuine, intelligent, dignified, kind and funny.

R.I.P. John and Roll on 2005. We can do better than this.

3 film books , and 1 Greatest Rock DIscography

I got 3 film books for Christmas. I thought I would tell you about them.

1# The Story Of Film by Mark Cousins.
http://www.harpercollins.com.au/title.cfm?ISBN=1862055742&Author=0021984
A certain Cube projectionist who shall remain unamed who doesn’t rate Mark Cousins much, was like
“Mark Cousins, Shmousins, What a Tosser!” Apprently he interviewed David Lynch on the TV and didn’t let Lynch talk.
and asked him about The Colour Blue as in Blue Velvet. And it was the first time that lynch had opened up to the TV ever ever ever and runined it, but talking over him. Anyhows, this Story of film, its a bit like the Mathew Collins for films, which sometimes we need a bit of . You know to understand that highbrow stuff, but written in a way we can understand. Take the facts that you are looking for and don’t take Cousins too seriously.

2# Seeing Is Believing.

Anyhow in it JP plans to leave this book by his bed side and read a fact a day. In honnor of the late great JP. I have decided I will do an illustrated fact a day, not just from this book, but from many of the other preteneding me to be more highbrow than I am books.

wish me luck.
