Voyage outside The Cube

Yes, another not strictly Cube event, but still in the extended family thanks to organiser of the old pedestrian nights ( and so much more ) Tom Pause_2.

Now we are up to September 24th, and Voyage into The Unknown 2, which featured many many things, including zombie djs Granzon Nodo playing atmospheric horror library music on portable record players, and occasionally instruments . . .

That's Tom with us on the right

. . . it was a really magical outing, and a pleasure to be ( minimally ) involved . . .

misty spooky woooh

I won’t review everything that went on, but one of the great things was the chancing upon ( or even creating ) strange scenes, like Morgan and Zulieka’s impromptu baroque ballet to Colin Smith’s spooky improvisations . . .

The long fingers of dooooooom !! ! ! ! !

. . . or the fun to be had trampolining in the dark . . .

Might as well jump

The first VITU happened in 2003, and it is a mystery to me if or when there is going to be a VITU3 . . . I hope so though . . .

CUBE MICROPLEX AS ENDORSED BY:

MELT BANANA
melt banana
photos by Hugh Spiller
aka Lensman

SEE.
Ok so it wasn’t at the Cube but it was promoted, I think, by Cube stalwart Chiz, and there were lots of Cube regulars at Tokyo’s finest Noise niks. These pictures were also taken by Orchestra Cube Bassist/Guitarist Hugh Spiller aka Lensman.
Anyhow someone (Ed?) gave Yako, Melt Banana’s singer, a Cube sticker which as you can see she placed upon her person.

More celebrity endorsements coming soon.

Hog: The Birthday Sadomasochist

Fraid so. Who else on their Birthday would choose a hark back to the days of Nuclear war theme?
First up The War Game from the sixties.
wargamesameand againyep and againcoppers killing th diseasedwaryes This guy guilty of over acting was well guilty of overacting. Anyhow I think like many others that we thought it was satirical at first, but pretty soon it became apparent that Hog was trying to depress us. Luckily I was on the wheels of steel and reached for The Cramps to cheer up the stunned audience as they came out audience members depressed thank goodness I left the Leonard Cohen at home.
Many people came in fancy dress, including some of Hog’s budddies from Oxford. Well done you.
Of Course they were then up staged By Mr Hopkinson, Morgan and Patrick you upstaging bastrdsMr Hopkinson Cosmonaut Hopkinsoneven went so far as to have Nasa controlling his every move.
Next in Hog’s emporium of Depression (Hog beiong 30 really isn’t THAT bad) was When The Wind Blows
When the wind blows I couldn’t bring myself to watch this but I did venture to see the Cube style extras you Just don’t get with other Cinema experiences astronauts v When the wind blowscrazy baby Despite that humourous interlude Barry informed me it was most depressing. Many of us had wisely chosen to stay i the bar where played some music very quietely as not to disturb the film, we also chose to all speak in crazy Borat style accents as if we were from Kazakhstan. Of Course maybe the beer and Vodka had something to do with it (my friend).
Everybody who is anybody was there, includng fairly new recruit Charlie Charlie He did a sterling job, especially in complimenting me on the tunes I played.
DJ Richie Paradise I admit I’m not much of a Dj but I wasn’t too bad this time, probably aided because I played some music people wanted to hear. Apart from this chap this chap Now well done sir for making the effort to dress up, but asking for the ‘R & B’ to be turned off (when I’m playing quality HipHop) and replaced by ‘Flock Of Seaguls’, well honestly…..
So I compromised and we listened to favourite shirts by Haircut 100, which is a great song and has a fantastic Latin Jazz break in the middle, making it, in my opinon, the first Latin Jazz song.
Now I think there was a radiation leek from the weapons grade plutonium that The Cube looks after for the Goverment (my military past catching up with me again), bet you didn’t know that did you? Well think about. How could abunch of lefties run a place like the Cube without it going bust without taking the Man’s Dollar?
leeki'm meltingmoney from the man
The last film was Threads, which I had been told was really depressing, so ferget about it, though it does sound very interesting.

So after that time for some dance therapy dance therapy Zorba The greek proving a real favourite witht the punters (do you hear me party people?). And also some Astronaut cross dressing catherine cosmonaut
Poor old Hog was a bit poorly and I hardly saw him all night.
I jest some what about the Sado masochism, horse for course and all that and after all if it had been my birthday night it would have been Burlesque all the way, but it was fine night with much joviality.
By the end just the hardcore were left and we were treated to an exhibiton of dancing by a drunk man I never found out the name of drunkmandancing
Not to be out done, Charlie also went for it, with aplomb ChuckGo Charlie

Happy Birthday Hog Man,

Double Trouble

The next night ( the 16th of September ) at The actual Cube there was dual album launch for albums by Rasha Shaheen . . .

Ra Ra Sha Sha

. . . and Emily Breeze ( sadly not pictured ). I came to show my support, but to be honest I was rushing about so much that I missed most of the shows, but there was a great atmosphere and having got copies of the albums and I heartily advised you dear reader to get copies too, if you haven’t yet.

Meanwhile, or I think a bit later, in the office there was some kind of dodgy elven fantasy face painting steez occuring . . .

face the paint

. . . and everyone ( including me briefly ) coming on like Mendelev and Dongolev . . .

arrowed!!

i c a , eh?

Back in mid September, I went to see my singing computer ( not to be confused with the band My Computer ) supporting Freeze Puppy and Minotaur Shock at the ICA, which was the London date of a five date tour ( most of which I missed due to cut-up video busy-ness ) put on by Qu-Junckions which is basically Chiz & Mark ( pictured below Mark, me, then Chiz ) . . .

basically Chiz & Mark. And me there. But I'm not Qu Junckions.

. . . who I went down in a car with. And who’s organising, and Cube related roles, is the tenuous link that I’m using to post this here. They checked out a few venues for future, now past shows, like Murcof at The Spitz, and I met up with pre-Cube Minto-era ex-Bristol dwellers and old chums Doug Smith ( pictured below, with Freeze Puppy on the left ) Phaedra ( not pictued ) and also John Hayward ( also not pictured ). . .

happy puppy

The computer was on first to a good reaction, and he also had surprisingly healthy CD sales.

Freeze Puppy was amazing, really winning over the crowd with his unusualness that thankfully didn’t bewilder in a bad way.

Then I joined headliners Minotaur Shock, that is David ( who is MS, really ) plus Emily ( on flute and more ), on stage to operate the dvd backdrop . . .

view from the vj pit

I messed up one of the cues to my eternal internal shame, though I don’t think the audience noticed. Phew.

All in all a great night, entertaining and thought provoking enough without lacking life which I’ve thought is a pitfall the ‘gig space’ of the ICA can sometimes find itself in. The gallery’s always pretty spot on though, and I enjoyed having the chance to see the 80’s Art re-vist ‘The Real Me’ exhibit.

More old news to follow . . .

Remember November

The Cubelog is now 1 year old , under my moderation anyway – there’s that one crazy fan attracting Devendra post last October from when Lady Lou was doing the do, so it’s prolly got 2 b-days like the queen and The Cube but I reckon November marks the beginning of the cube blog as we now know it.

Not that it’s been really fully under my moderation recently – well I haven’t been posting anyway as you may have noticed, so thank you to Richie, Lady and Adam for keeping it going . . . I’ve continued silently with the upkeep which hopefully you haven’t noticed like the frantic legs beneath a particularly dashing drake.

Whatever, man, I’ve just waded through my picture archive and will come back with my take on everything from the Oddbods getting giddy at the ICA thru to Hog’s 30th . . .

. . . & happy blogday to us all.

1st Prize to: Effects Pedals

pedals
Not our best occasion and I’m a hurry so I’m gonna keep this simple people. WE SUCKED BIG

Well it was inevitable really, a good run of creativity crowned by last weeks Mr Hopkinson gig kind of meant we had to eventually take a fall.
A new member though, seen here playing Clarinet. her name began with O, Oneli?, and she did a sterling job.
new member
best bit of evening was Hugh’s idea of all playing the effects pedals in a loopy thing, ‘cus of numbers me and Team Brick played a backing track to the noise jam. Needed to be louder but hey…….

Hopefullly the next one will be of full of creative juices.
If you’d like to see more pictures go here

Cutting Up Mr Hopkinson

Mr Hopkinson: Genius
holy cow Damn this was a good night and should go down in a top nights at the Cube Ever list (perhaps a Channel 4 tv program hosted by Jimmy thnigybob).
Anyway the night started well with hilarious drinking in the bar by Hugh ‘Lensman’ Spiller lensman either that or long haired men drinking are highly comical to our antipodean cousins (in this case ‘Brassy’ Belinda Davies). Meanwhile backstage Tomoko and Elly contemplted the madness that was to come tomoko and ellie contmeplate…………..
So the orchestra were first up, we waited as Mr Hopkinson explained on the screen what it was we were going to do, basically a giant bird was going to conduct the Orchestra via a system of hand signals as developed by Peter SwafferReynolds. No honestly, SEE Giant Bird conducting The Orchestra waited spell bound, and the audience looked on in horror and amazement at was what to unfold audience Personally I don’t remember much about the music, we haven’t done the conducting signs thing for some time but we played well to the signs, here Ellie demonstrates ellie and it must of worked ‘cus the audience didn’t walk out, yes I said the audience didn’t walk out! hence Ellie’s rather smug (and stoned) look (thats Richard and his melodica in the background factfans) smug! a round of applause and then improvised craziness till the curtain brought an end to our most experimental of performances. Well done to all, Peter, Tomoko, Hugh, Stuart, Belinda, Team Brick, Richard, Ellie and myself, not to mention Jesse as the bird and Mr H himself.
Next up Kowledge of Bugs 9v orchestra. This was MAD bugsmad Underneath the stage and seat Tom Bugs used movement snesors to create an orchestra of noises. I’m not sure what to suggest Tom, a good psychiatrist or the number for the ARTS Council.
have to admit I missed the Turntable Orchstra as I was seeing a friend from Spain in The Bell but I was told by Bryn (seen here on the left of me) Bryn and Paradise that they should win the Turner Prize, and as a gentlemman and the husband of Belinda then I’m prone to believe him.
Meanwhile in the bar my Movieoke sparring partner Colin Smith Colin Smith backed up Diss Miss on the decks with his keyboard antics. This was mighty impressive stuff, and there was some fine dancing in action by the sizeable crowd.
Then Finally we had Mr Hopkinson’s Cutting Up My Friends film very clever Which kind of started with Mr H punching out bits in card before playing it through one of those wind up thingys. What followed was unbelieveably good hopkinson cuts hair of adam i think and apparently it’s only the first draft. The graphics were amazing, the music sensational and the whole thing so iimpressive that the main reaction of the audience was huge crazy smiles and Evagelical hands in the air nuttyness, SEE WOWWWWWWWWWWWWW!crazed richie I really liked the bit where a tiny piano was being played whilst a penguin swum in the background. My Camera chose to run out of power around here but honesrtly the reaction of the crowd was fantastic, I feel truely honoured to have been involved in the peformance and in the film. Mr Hopkinson, we salute you.

A great day my friends, look out for further screenings.

yours gobsmacked Richie Paradise gobsmacked Richie Paradise

PS Hopefully Mr Hopkinson will wax lyrical on his feelings about the night too.

Back! Bigger! Better! Bolder!

barrybel gardani et al
It seems I spoke too soon, for the Maestro is NOT DEAD, LONG LIVE THE MAESTRO!
maestro
But he was late, so he had to do the new organised, disciplined Orchestra’s 20 press ups. Good lad.
Before he arrived we ran through the old signals in preparation for saturday’s Mr Hopkinson’s Cuttting Up my Friends extravaganza performance. And there were a few old faces, Mark on sax and Dani, on Clarinet, who looked like a cross between Rob Tyner (Of MC5 Fame) and one of them from The Mars Volta. See dani Dani did a bit of conducting in a crazed Maestro way dani conducts huimself though he seemed to think the V sign was a valid instruction.
Tomoko fell asleep sleep but forgive her for she is our pink rose
Pink Rose of the Orient, and a darn fine Bassist to boot.

But what of the music Mr Paradise? I hear you cry, well the crazed mixture that was the signaled music and then we got down to waht we’ve been doing for the last fews months without the maestro, a e i o uyoung guns go for it!hugh and tomokoWham and Kajagoogoo covers. Marcus was late, 40 press ups for him, and his paunch needed the help believe me……..
Personally I jsut struggled to do what I do best blast self publicity, though me drumming was ‘crisp and enjoyable’ (Copyright The LA times)
Anyhow a team buyildng exercise down the pub proved fruitful, the Orchestra that drinks together stays together after all, just look at those happy smiles we are family and like most families we look a bit alike 3 brothers Grimm Marcus clearly older wiser, middle brother Barry sensible clean cut but full of anger and then poor younger stupider, uglier Team Brick. Isn’t life strange?

Next was Mr hopkinson’s Cut Up night but that’ll have to wait for another day.

Ciao for now, Your friend Richie Paradise Richie Paradise

Overall the weekend went great. On Friday night was ultra nervous as I remembered that the artists were being flown especially for it. Luckily there was an audience and by the end of the night they were standing on the Cube auditorium chairs watching Electronicat do his thing to audience members shouting “You sexy bastard.” Miss Le Bomb was like Blondie (the first thing I did on the internet was to look up Blondie lyrics) and her cover version of Jelous Guy really pleased My Roxy Music/ Bryan Ferry
soul. Missi also does a magazine and that’s great too. It’s half written in German and half written in English. Miss Le Bomb told me about her band Queen of Japan . I enjoyed djing too and ended up having some late of night drinks with the performers including Vanishing Breed who was by this time collapsed and had to endure some more dancing around to songs like Downtown. Leaha was also a brilliant sound tech and thanks for last minute help from Tom Buggs and James.
Saturday, Alex and I took a stroll around Bristol and it felt nice to do that. I love being a tourist in my own city sometimes. Also I havn’t been able to do it for a while because I have been working as an invigilator. After some food. a recipe I made up. quick lentil mousaka went to see
Kevin Blechdom, Planning To Rock and Organ Lady. Awsome. What amazing use of Cube stage. Baloons ( hydrogen baloons are on her rider). At the end she got the offal out of the tesco bag that Chiz had got from the butchers up Gloucester road. I felt like these are women who are doing stuff not really like no one else.

Afterward we took the rock stars over to Under_score. It was difficult to get in, but we managed it. At one point I saw Duncan saying “Kevin, you’ll have to wait you turn ” which was quite funny. It turns out that
PTR knows Emma H from art college so that was a sweet little connection. We went back to my house and played cards. I learned a new trick, well actually my only card trick.
Kevy B is the most freckily person I have ever met. I would like to draw her portrait. All in all I felt inspired by these performers and they make me want to do more of that kind of thing. I think Super Group Extreme should do more stuff.

Sunday night I realised that a couple had brought a festival ticket each and so that was good to hear. Quite a few people turned up for the Chicks film and The Nomi song. Meanwhile James and I had a fun dj clash in the bar. It went something like this from what I remember and I think we’ll be doing it again at Campari Safari- underscore soundclash
Bikini Kill- Helen Love- Sonic Youth does Beach Boys- love- Sebodah- liz phair- death sentance panda- gravy train- blonde readhead- undertones- stereo total-

So ich bin ein berliner was good, I was pleased with it.
Thank you to everyone who played and helped out and cube and qu junktions
