Movieoke 4: A Nightmare on Dove Street (South)

Hmmmmmmmmm.

life of brian

He’s not the son of Max headroom, he’s a very naughty boy:hops

A Difficult one this. Like Mr Hopkinsonsaid, lack of staff made things difficult, but on the positive side there was a good turn out and lots of people keen to perform, which is slightly ironic. Anyway lots of pretty pictures for y’all to peruse:
maxmax

Well done to those staff who did work, an admiral effort all round,

Mary, Matt, James and the rest (you know who you are) mary et al

‘But why the crazy pictures Mr Paradise?’ I hear you cry, well things got a little bit blurry later. To protect the innocent the crazy post gig shenanigans involving boiler suits and body balancing shall only be revealed at alter date, when this countries moods and mores have taken a Cubessent shift…………

Here, then and now

I saw the core Here crew on the way to The Cube yesterday, when the shop looked like this . . .

yesterday

I nearly tempted them to Movieoke – with new additions to the menu like Buffy and Spaced, but they didn’t get there – but they must have been busy because less than 24 hours later the shop looks like this . . .

Today

Nice work.

I’m now off to the Here Shop Party at The Cube, featuring the Orchestra amongst many others . . .

More on that later . . .

Bitter Sweet Messy Movioke

Hmpfh. Well, to be honest I returned from this month’s Movieoke feeling a bit drained and depressed. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t a bad night for the Cube – it was better attended than ever, despite it being holidaying August, but it certainly didn’t run as smooth as last month’s when it felt like it was really coming together.

Two crucial crew members were sadly missing and very sorely missed . . . ( we all now appreciate even more what you do do when you are there ! )

First absent-with-leave was walking movie encyclopaedia and DVD changist Hog, whose role was taken by a good humoured but tested Rod – already quiet inconvenienced by supplying and setting up all his equipment for all the Movieokes so far despite it always falling in the middle of much of his own work, and being give very short notice each time. He struggled all night locating first the DVDs and then the specific scenes from Hog’s extensive archive.

Second was the Movieoke human host and general overseer Tom, who’s big boots were stepped into by Ed Stoner ( sat on the left in the green t-shirt, in the Reservoir Dogs scene below ) . . .

True Blue

. . . who, though as he admitted was nervous to begin with, did a good job as on the stage presence for his first time – the problem was all the other organisational parts . . .

Along with Tom and Hog, also missing were . . .

Front of House ( or FOH in internal cube email speak )
    Event Manger
    DJs in the Bar
    Sound technician

. . . after phoning round James graciously filled the first two and me, Rod and François – all inexperienced – cobbled together an initial sound mix which wasn’t exactly great as Richie ( on drums ) couldn’t really hear Colin ( on piano ) properly all night. I put my iRiver on random in the Bar, more important than you might think as people wait for the auditorium to open . . . which was quite a wait . . .

Colin, the musical maestro who keeps time better on stage, didn’t show up until 9, and the auditorium didn’t open til gone 9:30.

It’s not unusual for the Cube to run a bit late – but quite a few potential punters intrigued by the increasing popularity of the night apparently took the listed 8pm start seriously and left perplexed before the main doors opened, and more who did get in were put off by the elongated times in-between turns due to the searching for scenes . . . having said that I don’t think it actually looked too bad from the audience’s point of view . . . we all did what we could to keep it running along.

The audience did themselves proud in fact – there was no trouble getting people up to have a go – in fact there was more wanting to try than we had time for.

One group of enthusiastic regulars, featuring Dan and Martin ( pictured below chatting post the 11pm cut off with Rod ) . . .

Serious Movieoke-goers

. . . brought a big bag of DVDs, all checked for subtitles and with very organised scene donating post-it notes!

Dan ( on the left ) also took some great pictures of the night too, which you can see here, the 1st of which, apparently, was posted live from the stage!

We need to keep up with this kind of style – the email list of films I was sent, and had made up into a fancy looking menu, wasn’t exactly accurate I discovered when I got to the Cube to set up at 6, and we were soon back to hand written ones.

As suggested before I really think we could benefit from making a list of specific scenes rather than just movies – though there is something to be said for spontaneity and flexibility – if Colin had prior knowledge of the Wickerman we wouldn’t have had that great moment last month for instance, but a firmer base to go off the rails from would be better . . .

I think in generally more co-ordination is needed, hopefully ( possibly ? ) with some hands-on help from instigator Mark and intelligent joined up preparation that means no one is over-stretched, or called in too last minute.

Anyway it is still a good and exciting thing, still in embryonic form, that is attracting much interest – it’s just that it could be so much better if the people volunteering to make it happen could have as much fun as those coming to see it / be it . . .

. . . anyway, enough complaining- it wasn’t all misery, after packing down me and Rod had fun finding faces in the projection room . . .

just face it

. . . and I got a lift back with our the equipments, which was nice ( our own that is, not swiped stuff from the projection room!).

Yes You Can Can Can

can

They said our methods were unsound, untested, dangerous. That some had been driven to the depths of depression or happy clappy madness
ale bel.

To be fair they’re probably right but that won’t stop us. I think Mr Hopkinson touched on Ale’s concern and I think thats why the poor chap looks so glum in the photo above. Not sure what Belinda’s excuse for looking like a nutter is…….

Mr H, seen here indulging in camera war with me (again) war

sold himself a bit cheap in his blog, he did a great thing with a recording of some seagulls, and he stroked my ego with his cd copy of Mark Radcliffe’s dulcet Manc tones when he chatted to me on Radio 2. As you can see Mr H was mourning the loss of Mr Moog, who kicked the can, sorry Bucket, this week.

A good turn out, bolstered by College Green recruit Chris (seen her with Gareth on Sax)
chrs gareth, Gareth has a suave air about him which also seems to make him quite photogenic, see here he is again with Tomoko garteh and tomoko
Mr Hopkinson did get a big confused into thinking there was two bass players, Hugh was on Guitar Mr Hopkinson, sir – see guitar see. Perhaps he was confused by my Roland kit (when is my endorsement coming? I plug it all the time, payola style), which makes a very convincing bass sound. Or he is just a plain fool.

With all the excitement of My new Business cards and a tune I dedicated to myself (Ode to Richie Paradise), I think I slightly lost it
richi lost itrichie losing it. Maybe it was that End of Summer feel. And man the summmer has burnt up Mark almost as much as his playing scorched the very fabric of musicality mark.

A great session which took in alot of moods and grooves, hopefully we should be in fine fettle for The Here party on saturday.

Cube Orchestra back in the Cube

After last week’s outdoor outing, Orchestra Cube was back on stage this Wednesday . . .

first arrivals

The plan had been to have some sort of practice for our part in the Here shop party, which involves playing with drawers ( that’s people who draw, not things in chest of drawers ( or should that be chest of draweri ? )).

The Here Shop drawers had been invited via email, but the bounders never even showed – probably scared of the Cube’s renowned rounders skillz . . .

Ale, on percussion, was most visibly worried about not having a practice along with the drawing before the performance – as a replacement we improvised to Richie’s new business card, and had a musical version of “Kick the Can“, who’s intricate rules I still can’t fathom – but seemed to be mainly based on a change in musical direction in the event of some can kicking.

There were some really interesting moments in the playing – partly due to the combination of monophonic instruments – as both keys and guitar happened to be absent this time there were lots of horns ( including new recruit Chris on Clarinet who wandered in on the busking last week ) and two bass guitars . . .

horny bassy bassy

My “Cube” amp had it’s first on stage outing, though I didn’t feel I made the most of it – I’m still working out what I can do with it in the setup – and felt slightly outside and awed – probably the most interesting thing I did, I think, was use the stage steps on their side as my table . . .

Side-steppin'

Anyway, so . . . Related dates for your diary are . . .

Friday ( which is tomorrow as I post ) for Movieoke with Richie and me ( as Max blackout ).

[ Incidentally, as I left after the OC practice, I met Movieoke regulars-and-stars, Martin Poulter & friends ( including Danbri, who just added a comment to the last Movieoke post ) on their way to see Bluescreen. ]

Saturday for the Here shop party for drawing and orchestra.

Then on Sunday The Cube will beat The Here shop hands down at rounders. You’ll see . . .

Third of several busk posts

I wasn’t going to blog the Orchestra Cube busking experience as Richie got there first, but on his insistence, here’s a little one from my perspective . . .

It started for me with taking my portable record player for modification, care of the circuit king, himself, Tom Bugs . . .

in the bug cave

. . . he kindly installed a cut off switch which meant I could scratch & cut with it without a mixer. Did still need an amp though, and for the busking, and future orchestra-ing I bought an appropriately named Micro Cube.

I got to College Green a little late, with the Orchestra already in full flow . . .

oc so green

It was fun, as already documented, and we even made some cash for The Cube . . . all thanks to the Street Serenade project, co-ordinated by Jesse.

We celebrated with a smiley drink in the sun . . .

drop

I was back on my own on Saturday. Well, I was part of a line-up, starting with Fromage en Feu, a “4 piece crazy franglo music with clarinet and trombone.” who I enjoyed a lot – especially the cheeky trombonist who was propelling fat notes at passing dogs and laughing kids.

Anyway I wasn’t on my own for long as it turned into a bit of a workshop with curious skatekids wanting to have a go scratching in the open air . . .

gis a go mate

After me was a full on Brass, or actually silver, band ( Crofts End Mission Silver Band ) . . .

a mind consumed by brass ( money )

If you’re reasonably on guard you might spot someone with pink hair in the band on the right there [ above ], but I was there and I didn’t even notice anything in the tree above her until a keen eyed Japanese tourist turned to me and asked, “Why is the tree full of shoes?” . . .

shoe tree

. . . I didn’t know at the time, but I asked Kayle & Lady ( part of the Cube Skate Team ) later and they said it’s something called “Hang em High”, the only on-line reference to which I could find was here.

To begin with the skaters stopped skating for the silver band, and sat on the benches and watched. After a while though they started competing with each other. The next group, the wonderful four piece jazz band The Blessing, wisely moved onto the green where their sound seemed to slot in perfectly with the Saturday afternoon ambience . . .

nice

Two members of The Blessing, Jim Barr on upright bass, and Tony Orrell on Drums, are also in Quadrobe, who played at Blackout this year, as well as at The Cube for the Moog documentary screening. Jim mentioned how ill Bob Moog was, which I didn’t know at the time. As you may well have heard he very sadly died the next day.

I’ve put up a little streaming video comp of bits off my digital camera from Saturday’s busking here – you will need a reasonably good connection and Flash installed to see it though . . .

Here versus The Cube at rounders

I feel compelled to write about the forthcoming historic Bristol underground sports match that
will take place next Sunday the 28th.
It’s a game of rounders and it will be us versus “http://www.thingsfromhere.co.uk”
Meet at 2PM at the water tower, that’s the water tower on top of the downs.

With people like Mark saying
“I’ll play, I’m really competitive” who knows what’s gonna happen

All you should care about is that’s it’s the taking part that matters.
So rather than a match, a friendly…

Although saying that theres been some pretty nasty rummours going round.
There’s just been one email to cube administration from a here representative
going you loose
and the very same here representative sent the same message to the shop administration saying
we win.

Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Park

The Punters were anxious, for they had gathered early, eagerly anticipating a show, a spectacle, a Spectacular
punterspunters 2punters 3
Well baby they got one. If the audience does not come to you, then You must go to the audience. And with that The Cube Orchestra went to college Green and showed the general public, the oi polloi, just what it is that we do.
milling
At first we milled around, unsure when or how to start, and then we just started doing itococ2
Hopkinson turned up late (that’s 100 lines you owe me boy) mr hopkinson
but what he had to offer with his baby cube amp was great, a lovely contrast to the mainly acoustic output acoo stickkkkkk Which was great too, don’t get me wrong.
I was most happy to see the string section back in action strings,
the Sisters Emma and Amy Roe seen here adding that sophisticated edge to the general philistines you normally find in the Cube Orchestra.
(your author Richie Paradise Baby excluded readers).

In fact Emma emma was a real favourite of one skater, who got a little bit too excited, plucking her cello and getting a bit gobby, and I had to tell him to go forth and multiply (but not in those words).
Poor old Tomoko Tomoko our Japanese multi instrumentalist had to put up with a very drunk Punk who wanted to, ah hum, have a bash on her bongo. Why is it that Punk + Cider = The West Country? I suppose its like Aids and Nigerian Prostitute, some things are unfortunately made to go together (before you moan at me go to the link).

Right moving on………………………………………..
Mark mark
seen here with the strings, took improv to a whole new level when he introduced the art of EATING A SANDWICH mid set sandwich You should have seen the audiences reaction, ‘quite extraordinary, really quite extraordinary‘ was one reaction and another passer by was heard to comment that he hadn’t seen such a display since Roland T. Kirk ate a whole hog roast mid set in the 1970’s.
Stew was the height of coolness (he’s even got one of those trendy jazz style chin beards)
stuart Yunnno I’m often mistaken for a guitarist ‘cus I’m a total poser but like my last blog where I showed Hugh and Stew’s posing, Stew has taken it to a whole new level. Restrained, adept and with depth, I’m forced to take off my hat to you Stew Stew hey and Damn good geetar playing too buddy. Ale too played Getar at one point but the only pic of our Chilean genius is the one above on his mandolin.

So what of the Music I hear you ask? Well there was a great mixture, some summery style chilled out stuff, even a breakbeat tune at one stage, a waltz that I thought worked really well, an experiment with Dani’s dice which dictated how many beats to the bar (though there was criticism of my interpretation of 3 at one stage, don’t forget as Maestro Peter Swaffer Reynolds said even if we are wrong, we are right). When we played 1 beat to the bar I thought it sounded like a twisted Motown tune. We ended an hour and a half of improv in the open air with a lovely Andy Shepherd style jazzy tune which had a fantastic sax solo from Mark, built around solid chords from Piano maestro Marcus marcus Seen to the left of Marcus was a passer by who felt the love of Orchestra Cube and joined in, I believe his name was Chris. Chris, we too felt your love, right on.

And how did we go down? Well a few comments were positive and judging by the looks of people walking home from work and the amount who stopped and watched it was all good. Down the pub later we all agreed we’d enjoyed ourselves immensely. How much did we make? Well £100 for the Cube and £1.60 for us. I’m gonna put that on a horse up the bookies next week and see if it makes any money. I’ll let you know how I get on.

A big pat on the back for all who played, Ale, Stuart, Mr. Hopkinson, Tomoko, Emma, Amy, Marcus, Dani, Richie Paradise, Belinda and guest star Chris. A big thanks to Jesse for sorting it all out.

Well done also to Ed and Miles for turning up before any of the Orchestra to lend your support, this Bud’s for you friends (in Miles case this cider)
ed and miles

Till next time pop fans, richie paradise Richie Paradise
