Write on!

Well I turned up late this week whereby I was greeted with the words, “Talk of the Devil”, this is getting to be a consistant occurence in my life, so thank you O Dark lord. Anyhow what I saw before me was a bunch of ‘musicians’, I use that word in the loosest possible way, scribbling away on the floor like little children writerrrs write writer.
To my surprise it wasn’t the Orchestra members filling out their giro applications but a way of sculpting a piece of music by writing a keyword to dictate how you sould try and play. Here Marcus demonstrates:
marcus.
How we played a Hillbilly Hoedown (amongst other suggestions) with a tambourine, dabuka, tablas, sax, keyboards and two electric guitars you should hopefully be able to find out soon via our Web sites download section.
Gareth was so sickenly good on his Sax that It drove him a kind of sick green colourgreen gareth. Hugh and Stuart also rocked out on their twin geetar attack rock on But they also knew when to take it a step back and be cool Daddio be cool. Not sure if Tomoko has been listening to a lot of Miles Davis recently but she definately hit a Blue period blue tomoko.
Have to say the Japanese can be really cool if they wanna.
Some of the music performed during this piece was quite beautiful, almost Orb like at one stage, kinda trippy and we showed how we can transend different moods and musical styles very quickly and easily, and this is the beauty of The Cube Orchestra – We’re doing something that nobody else is, and though it might not make people green with envy, it sure did something to us green with envy? Cue pats on back all round.
I feel the urge to mark a few people on their efforts (Its a novelty for me, I don’t do any at skool), Zero marks for originality to Marcus for writing the word CHEESE, I guessed it was you straight away. 10 points to Ale Ale for playing the Table like a mo fo and for the improvised singing at the end, which included the line “We played like yer mother“. Hugh 8 points for the ambient keyboard playing and Mr Hopkinson -5 for sitting downstairs and messing about on the computer instead of doing groovy dj stuff.

The Orchestra is busking at College Green THIS WEDNESDAY (17th) from about 4.30-5ish for as long as we want, so come on down and watch or if you are a member of the Orchestra join in.

Ciao for now, Your biggest fan, Richie Richie Paradise.

Movieoke 3 Inverness Caledonian Thistle 4

You’re beautiful, give yourselves a big round of applause, Come on! Louder!
audience audinece etc
Yes Movieoke was back and it was truely quite magnificent and slightly less shambolic too, for example check this out:
2001
2001 proving a fine start to the evening. More fine young people got in on the action peeps more peepes, it took ’em a while to get going, a duet between Tom and Myself doing the ‘Play It Again Sam’ scene from Casablanca showed how easy it is to be a budding Lawrence Olivier, John Gielgud or Timmy Mallet.
Max was of course right on form, especially with the groovy dancing Maximus max maxx
I Have to admit I tried the Max treatment before hand and it can be a bit disconcerting scary richie

Big shouts out to Tom who handled proceedings superbly, look at the skill of the man as he whips the audience into a frenzy, tommy he had them baying for blood at one stage, was it my imagination or did he deliver? blood

And there was blooshed when the Lightsabers came out to play
star wars

Now maybe I’m destroying the dream abit here but isn’t that Max smiling sans screen?
amx?

I was a bit disconcerted to find a Cyclops backstage cyclops or was it just me and Mr Hopkinson playing Camera war?
Also back stage these fine young ladies, my mate Mel and Volunteer Kathryn mel and kathryn who had suprised me earlier by asking if there was anything she could do, cueing a Sid James style laugh from me. Er anyway why the Movieoke 3 Inverness Caledonian Thistle 4 headline? Especially as you know I’m a fan of Partick Thistle? Well Mr Hopkinson mentioned it earlier, The performance of The Wicker Man was the highlight of the evening. Set on a remote Scottish Island its Pagan inhabitants do lots of weird things, just like The Cube. Colin was inspired in playing the Blue Peter theme, in fact I think the whole Pagan theme did something to him as he seemed to turn into The Green Man: colin

Anyhow a fine time was had by all, I hope to see you at the next one (last friday in August),

Ciao, Deus Ex Machina, richie Richie Paradise

Shouldn’t really be here, but looking so good . . .

This is the pretty loose in it’s connection to The Cube, but I thought you might like to see the latest snaps of the spacesuits for one of our Big Chill performances . . .

The Movieoke Three

Movieoke 3 was great – the best yet for me and Hog ( now official Movieoke Changist ), as we were on the side of the stage, rather than trying to work out what was going on from the soundproof projection room. This was thanks to Rod who came in early to set up . . .

blurry

Rod is, I guess, the almost invisible sixth member of the Movieoke team after Tom, Richie, Colin, Hog and me, (as) Max.

I’d actually come a bit too early and was waiting a while for a keyholder, with Lou (?) who was doing the sound . . .

invisible, man

The setup is complex, but worth it, I think – though there is a bit of a wear and tear issue with bits of both Rod’s and my kit playing up a bit under the stress, as well as us at points, but It was all good in the end . . .

amusing movieoke caption

There were some fantastic moments – a very good lounge music HAL scene ending with the Daisy Daisy sing-a-long – plus other Karaoke-Movieoke moments with two guys singing Big Bottom from Spinal Tap, and Colin perfect as Sam ( with Richie as the voice of Sam ) in Casablanca. Even what is usually the Changist’s worst nightmare . . .

JESUS CHRIST! NO!

. . . lack of subtitles . . . actually added to the best movieoke of the night, if not the season so far with a hilarious ( honestly ) Wickerman Finale with improvised dialouge and elements of Blue Peter, The Proclaimers and Life of Brian from Colin and Richie ( seen below celebrating in the office afterwards).

meet the band

With a healthy crowd, getting healthier I think it’s safe to say the whole team are looking forward to the next one . . . Fri 26th of August, ink it in now to avoid future disappointment . . .

United Colours Of Cube Orchestra

Greetings. orchestra
You know there’s been alot of chat recently amongst Orchestra members, and Cube High Brass, about where the Cube Orchestra is headed for and for all our chat we’re still not sure! Well not true, we’re going to be more pro-active. Lined up is something to do with The Here Gallery, a bi-monthly rescoring of a film and playing along to some improv/avant garde dancing.
Ale ale Our Chilean multi instrumentalist member has started the ball rolling on that one.
Did I mention we’re a great example of Multi Cultralism? This weeks meeting saw the introduction of Tomoko tomoko seen here helped by Hugh into his bass tomoko. She’s joined us from Kobe in Japan. Admirable bass work my friend from Nippon. A warning to Tomoko though, I’ll be practising my rudimentary Japanese at any opportunity, Typical Baka Gaijin.
For those who like sport, the Australians have taken it to a whole new level, well the Cube Orchestra’s resident True Blue has followed suit and taken improvisation into a new stratosphere, whilst we’re wasting our time playing belinda Belinda read a book.

This weeks turn out featured the ‘Hardcore’ and I have to say it really was pretty good what we did. I was also struck by how cool we actually are too, as you can see Mark was also struck by that very fact mark
I felt the urge to bust a groove rich richo.
Marcus marcusrecorded the results, hopefully that’ll find its way onto the web sometime soon, The man has an unhealthy obsession with Angelo Badalamenti, its the vibes baby I guess.

With solid rythm work from Marcus,Hugh and Ale, and yours truely, the horns were left to go for it, which they did with an aplomb
horn, though Mark did at one stage, fall asleep hornnnns but then, he is getting old and it was close to his cocoa time.

A great time was had by all, especially after Ale suggested we freak out towards the end, groovy daddio, groovy, we just didn’t want it to finish.

Here’s to next time, Comrade Richie Paradise comrade richie paradise

Back out again

Musings from Blackout 2005 . . .

Mostly I saw this . . .

The Blackout Bunker

. . . the inside of Max Blackout’s booth. But I heard everything. After a shaky start behind the scenes – Jem got stranded for 5 hours after putting petrol in a diesel engine, and one of my CD decks and mixer got damaged – things settled into greatness.

My highlights were VI’s ( a.k.a. Hogge’s ) mesmerising analogue sounds and sights, not adequately described by the following photos . . .

pulse programming

Also analogue involvement in the wonderful wig out of Quadrobe ( featuring Adrian Utley, Tony Orrell, Will Gregory, Jim Barr and an obscene amount of equipment . . .

load of knobs

I also particularly dug Minotaur Shock accompanying himself on virtual video drums ( even if it was not meant to be in black and white, tho I didn’t know that at the time ), the slow build of Motorboy & VJ Anyone, the end of the Saturday party shenanigans of Dutty Girl . . .

Dutty rocked

. . . and the thinking outside the tent lunacy of Duracell . . .

Brick like it

Plus of course the beautifully attired Blackout Usherettes, or Blusherettes . . .

Boom ! Boom !

I was video compere in the form of Max Blackout ( shown here indulging in some analogue special effects ) . . .

take three hats into the shower?

I got the feeling Max wasn’t as successful as last year – mainly due to not having much of a new slant on it due to lack of time because of various other pressures. Still, I realise it is a festival with a shifting audience and that means it would still have been a novelty for many watching. There’s some new ideas for next year I’ve been talking to Morgan about that should make it fresher . . .

One word I heard a lot is relation to Max was “Scary”. That’s good thing I think – I didn’t get to see what the audience saw though – the closest I got was this photo . . .

triple trouble ( plus one )

. . . care of Phil Hall. It’s the repetition that does it, I think.

Meanwhile, “backstage” there were planning meetings . . .

topless planning meetings

Various styles, including the popular long shorts look . . .

with straps

People lying on the ground . . .

humans are generally not tall enough to feel the curvature of the earth when they lie on it

and interacting in pairs ( for the camera ) . . .

look how small Jem looks !

Perhaps the biggest personal highlight for me was when compereing duties were over at the end of Sunday and I got a chance to let loose to the Village Disco at the afterparty, things got messy with the last 4 standing, me, Ali, Rod & Zulieka . . .

the village disco are at the Venn / Blackout than you do on Wednesday, I believe

After some sleep we found another strange multiple . . . 2 Cube cars!

the twelve sides of drive

. . . and home for more sleep.

Max Blackout will be appearing at the Cube Cinema for Movieoke on Friday the 29th of July.

David Hopkinson will be taking a bit of a break from intensive blogging as he goes into intensive video editing mode.

Please post here if you have anything Cube related . . . back sooner or later . . .

Get ya Ya Yas Out.

Or Feet;
marcusgazorchnew feet

To start with I am NOT a foot fetishist, I actually left a job as a stockman in a womans shoe shop as I was beginning to get tooo into womans shoes but that was an aesthetic thing. If I’m gonna have a fetish it’ll be something old skool (ok it IS something old skool)

Anyhow Croikey its hot, as our antipodean cousins might say, just like Belinda in fact belinda
seen here with Hugh and Gary. An interesting Orchestra Cube this week. A much better turn out with two newbies (as Dr. Cox from Scrubs might put it)
newbies
Bethan on French Horn and (apologies if this is wrong) Izzie? on Flute, ladies you did yourselves, and your Brethrin, proud. Gamely joining in the occasional beauty (our second interpretation of E.T) and the occasional horror (our first interpretation).

Song titles were popular this week. I offered ‘Half way through I noticed my flies were undone’, which was based on a true story. And then we hit a purple patch purple

where we did ‘An ode to feet’, inspired as we all had our feet out au naturale or in jesus creepers.

The extended horn section were magnificent today, full of windwind, especially during our duel piece. Belinda challenged me to start a piece and Mark suggested Peter wouldn’t allow me to use my hands so it was hi hat and bass drum for most of it. Everybody gave it some. give it Did I mention how good those horns were?
Mark markis getting a reputation as a musician pimp seeing as he keeps turning up with random but welcome additions.
We ended with ‘An Ode to the Tour de France’ which developed into ‘An Ode to Twin Peaks’ via Marcus’ vibe like keys and my brush work.

It’s all about the Vibes baby, all about the vibes.

Remember how hot I said it was? See if you can spot the difference betwen these two photos.
CLUE the first one was taken before I had started drumming and the second taken at the end.
rich richie

That’s right. In the second picture my shirt is RED.

Ciao, richie feet Richie Paradise

PS four of us groovy guys from The Orchestra are playing at The Croft this friday, it’s louder improv known as Sculpture. It’d be nice to see you. A Bien tot.

Movieoke 3, Blackout 4 ( Venn 2, too )

Much is going on preparing for Blackout 4 at Ashton Court, and it’s, um, my birthday on Friday ( St Swithin’s Day ), but let’s not forget Movieoke 3 coming up at the end of the month . . .

Colin returns for July's extravaganza!

Also, remember Venn 2? If you have fond memories of the more obscure corners of the SFA dj set, you might be interested in this compilation . . .

Blog stands for B-ack-log

Hmm, I seem to have settled into a student-washing-up style pattern of occasional blog splurges ( but thanks to Richie for keeping Orchestral updates coming and the different perspective ).

I’ve been even more snowed under than usual with a variety of demands, however here’s some more of the fun, and vaguely Cube related, and come to think of it snow related, bits . . .

At the end of June I went to the Cinemformation forum about non-cgi special effects at, ok yes, the Watershed with Cube program designer Morgan, and we got our tickets from rare red Cube badge sporting Amy . . .

Snow way

. . . there was a talk from someone from Snow Business, a company that’s provided a variety of fake snows for just about every film with a winter scene from Groundhog Day to The Day after Tomorrow ( who are based in Stroud! ) .

The second talk was from Tim Macmillan work from Time Slice Films who Morgan, and another chap whose name I can’t remember who also happened to be there ( pictured above ) , used to work for ( there all had no idea any of them were going to be there. )

I had originally meant to go with our own ingenious sfx designer, Pat, who’s been coming along well with the new spacesuits for one of our Big Chill performances . . .

re-suits yous sirs

In other news, the Here shop has a new ( accidental and I assume temporary ) uniform . . .

black and beige is the new black

. . . and excitingly, a new, meticulously programmed headed receipt – could do with more ink though ( this image is heavily photoshopped to show anything! )

There were a couple of laptop crises ( yes, that’s the correct plural of crisis ) recently . . .

backup

. . . it looked like 5 years of Jessika’s work had been unretrievably accidentally deleted by Duncan, though about 75% is now back with us, after a lot of fret and sweat . . . also, Robin retrieved Lucy’s work for Electric Pavilion from her extracted harddrive, but unfortunately her computer has now merged with the infinite.

Lucy, herself has finally made it to Berlin (as part of a project that’s been on the cards for a while ). Before she went, another project long talked about got a real world outing . . . Can’t Be Fucked Productions, the first night featuring some of the late John Peel‘s favourites, Darren Hayman of Hefner and Steveless . . .

Where's my poster archive ?

. . . plus Lucy on organisation and records . . .

6 7's

Also in the actual Cube, earlier in the day I saw Hogge manipulating a virtual Cube pondering future architectural possibilities . . .

Cube within a Cube

This year’s pre Blackout Blackout meeting looked like a lot of boys . . .

Boys from the black stuff

You can just spot Zuleika peering over Chiz‘s shoulder, and there are many women performers ( and indeed some more staff not present at the meeting ) but the balance has severely waned since the first more female friendly Blackouts. I don’t know why this is, but do hope more women step up to volunteer for future years for that balance . . . and, um, there’s no one who’s Black or Out either ( ahem ).

I made a brief Cube appearance last night for the Circle gig – well, actually I was dropping off some Computer Sings promos for Mark and was too knackered to stay, but it was very busy . . . if anyone feels the smallest twinge to write it up while I’m away building up the next babling blog backlog, please don’t hesitate . . !
