Blog stands for B-ack-log

Hmm, I seem to have settled into a student-washing-up style pattern of occasional blog splurges ( but thanks to Richie for keeping Orchestral updates coming and the different perspective ).

I’ve been even more snowed under than usual with a variety of demands, however here’s some more of the fun, and vaguely Cube related, and come to think of it snow related, bits . . .

At the end of June I went to the Cinemformation forum about non-cgi special effects at, ok yes, the Watershed with Cube program designer Morgan, and we got our tickets from rare red Cube badge sporting Amy . . .

Snow way

. . . there was a talk from someone from Snow Business, a company that’s provided a variety of fake snows for just about every film with a winter scene from Groundhog Day to The Day after Tomorrow ( who are based in Stroud! ) .

The second talk was from Tim Macmillan work from Time Slice Films who Morgan, and another chap whose name I can’t remember who also happened to be there ( pictured above ) , used to work for ( there all had no idea any of them were going to be there. )

I had originally meant to go with our own ingenious sfx designer, Pat, who’s been coming along well with the new spacesuits for one of our Big Chill performances . . .

In other news, the Here shop has a new ( accidental and I assume temporary ) uniform . . .

black and beige is the new black

. . . and excitingly, a new, meticulously programmed headed receipt – could do with more ink though ( this image is heavily photoshopped to show anything! )

There were a couple of laptop crises ( yes, that’s the correct plural of crisis ) recently . . .

backup

. . . it looked like 5 years of Jessika’s work had been unretrievably accidentally deleted by Duncan, though about 75% is now back with us, after a lot of fret and sweat . . . also, Robin retrieved Lucy’s work for Electric Pavilion from her extracted harddrive, but unfortunately her computer has now merged with the infinite.

Lucy, herself has finally made it to Berlin (as part of a project that’s been on the cards for a while ). Before she went, another project long talked about got a real world outing . . . Can’t Be Fucked Productions, the first night featuring some of the late John Peel‘s favourites, Darren Hayman of Hefner and Steveless . . .

Where's my poster archive ?

. . . plus Lucy on organisation and records . . .

Also in the actual Cube, earlier in the day I saw Hogge manipulating a virtual Cube pondering future architectural possibilities . . .

Cube within a Cube

This year’s pre Blackout Blackout meeting looked like a lot of boys . . .

Boys from the black stuff

You can just spot Zuleika peering over Chiz‘s shoulder, and there are many women performers ( and indeed some more staff not present at the meeting ) but the balance has severely waned since the first more female friendly Blackouts. I don’t know why this is, but do hope more women step up to volunteer for future years for that balance . . . and, um, there’s no one who’s Black or Out either ( ahem ).

I made a brief Cube appearance last night for the Circle gig – well, actually I was dropping off some Computer Sings promos for Mark and was too knackered to stay, but it was very busy . . . if anyone feels the smallest twinge to write it up while I’m away building up the next babling blog backlog, please don’t hesitate . . !

Smaller and Smaller

Dearly Beloved,
Small was the thing this week as Orchestra Cube did their thang
o c oc2lens

But what a beatiful result it was.
Cube volunteer Matt asked if he could sit and listen to just what it is we do. Well we weren’t going to stand for that, we insisted he play a part so he suggested we play something akin to Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean. Started very ordinary before we Cubed it, Diced it and made it one of our own.
Matt also took a few pictures for us, good job young man. For some reason when i tried to photo him he came out very blurred which led me to speculate there was no Matt at all but ‘Matt’ was some kind of ghost. Well when I did capture a picture I think you can see I was wrong, he is in fact some kind of Cyborg (I hear Cube superiors find them less fickle than the usual oi polloi, sorry artistes, who volunteer their time).
Or possibly the shakiness was just my Swinging handy work daddio
cymbal marcus
Marcus played something by Angelo Badalamenti which stirred me into talking about Burlesque (hey ANY excuse) and the fantastic brushwork on the Twin Peaks soundtrack. Cue Brushwork number with fine sax work from Gary. gary
Ok so there wasn’t alot of us there but the quality was superfluous. Some members will be playing the Battersea Road street party in Easton on saturday, go along watch, get inspired and I’ll see you next week (with your Homework this time Hopkinson).

Orchestral Splinter Cell?

Well if Belinda was right, no one turned up to rehearsal today, well I know Stew had a good excuse as he’s Somehere in Africa, and I don’t mean that’s his dj name, though I do rather like it….
Personnally I was playing cricket, so I have a perfect excuse but let me tell you, anyone else without a note signed by their parents will be in alot of trouble.

Anyhow the excitement caused by last weeks Punk Funk back to the old skool shenanigans of Richie Paradise, Young Liam, Mark Sax God and Hugh Lensman has resulted in an Al Qiada style splinter cell from within (but seperate to) The Cube Orchestra.

sculpture

Oh yeah there won’t be any of the Fundamental wahabi style Islam leanings of Al Qaida, but plenty of the free form doctrine as dictated by Osama Bin Swaffer Reynolds .
Head gear will remain optional but I’m pushing the Lion head gear as modelled by me here:

richie tiger

The music will remain freeform in nature but a bit louder than The Cube Orchestra and obviously with far less members.
Our first gig is an Ashton Court warm up (not for us) on Friday 15th July at The Croft with Steveless. Also a gig at The Junction on the 5th August with Team Brick and Unseen Flame.
I’m glad that the Cube Orchestra has resulted in more music being made, hopefully we’ll play the Cube soon. Of course if you really hate us blame Mark mark whose idea it was in the first place.

Still loving you after all these years, richie

For Services To Movieoke

Well Mr Hopkinson has summed up most of it but I’ll wax lyrical a little bit too.
Firstly Lady Lucy awarded Mr H with a Lady Lucy Badge, also known as The Cube Medal for going beyond the call of duty, for his sterling work after his medical nightmare.
lucy and dave
movemaxii
Have to say it was a really hard gig for me, had the difficult decison to make of what to drink after Zywiec ran out, oh and Mr H kept playing waltz songs and his usual madmix of stuff. I would have liked to blaze away a couple of times or play a few funky breakbeats, tis what the movies was made for. Anyhow hope it sounded ok from my end.
James did a streling job as MAX max
And there was some strong peformances I thought, can’t quite remember what they were all for but there was alot of
crouching crouching movieokeee
and I’m sure at one stage a girl gave another girl a piggyback, though that may have been the post gig party back at
Casa Paradise…………. anna strip rich
Movieoke is an ever changing beast, soon we’ll make it perfect (and no one will be there). Enjoyed it massively though and I’m beginning to meet more of The Cube family, what a lovely bunch they are.
Next time though somebody has to do a scene from Swingers, because you are soooooooo money, and you don’t even realise it.

Ciao for now, Richie Paradise

Max Blackout on Steroids

Well, things didn’t go too smoothly yesterday – I was seized by an incapacitating asthma attack ( probably brought on by recent the storm). Something I’ve never had to deal with before, and hopefully won’t have to again – it’s not very nice, feels a bit like how I imagine drowning might, and it can kill, you know. Fortunately Jem and Angela, who have previous experience and understanding of the condition, knew what to do and rushed me to the clinic for the appropriate drugs . . . from there I taken to the BRI A&E in an ambulance and wheelchair with an oxygen mask – all very dramatic.

I have no pictures ( Aaron later joked that not having my camera may have induced the attack . . . ) so you’ll have to take my word for it, though this morning I got a shot of the wristband you get, much like a festival . . .

wrist in peace

I got a 5 day course of steroids and an inhaler, and was recovered enough to have a ( reduced ) role in Movieoke that evening.

Behind the scenes Movieoke wasn’t super smooth – Colin Smith, the unbelievably good improv pianist, was in Glastonbury so musical duties were down to me with a stack of pretty random Library CDs and the equally unbelievably good ( though obviously to some extent melodically limited ) Richie on stage on drums.

Like last time, there was the same remove factor with Me and Hog in the projection room reacting via the audio feed to the goings on in the auditorium, which made getting levels right tricky. I had planned to be Max and music selector, but under the circumstances I handed over the white hat and suit to gentlemanly James, who obviously also had to deal with the delay.

Again I think a great time was had by the participating partying punters . . . eventually – there was a bit more of a slow build than the last one with people more reticent to get up on stage to start off, but, as ever, real world compere Tom was in control and stepped up to fill the initial gap and encourage the later gap lack . . .

A factor in this slow participation take up may well have been the wait in getting the doors open – there was quite overshot even by Cube standards. There’s a lot of setting up to do for the ‘okie, even if you are on full puff, but the event itself is also slowly building and it’s sure to get even better as we learn . . .

I think Richie found it a bit more challenging playing along with CDs rather than Colin ( which hopefully won’t happen too often, though if it does it would be good to have him mic’ed so we can interact ).

Hog was actually a bit less stressed than last time, now understanding the parameters a bit more. However, having Rod about would have helped some ( he had kindly set everything up in the early morning after the demanding Jamie Lidell gig but couldn’t be there on the night ). Without him some of the intricacies of the matrix and video mixer were lost on us, meaning at times Hog’s stress was doubled because he could only figure how to cue from a single DVD player.

Mark, the actual instigator of this monthly movieoke slot, was missing again ( Sonar and such ), but high quality help was at hand from Hogge , Adam and Lady, who was also launching her new, and very tasty, “Films in America, 1929 -1969” book on the perplexed imprint ( see post below ).

Swingin’ Richie P, when taking a break from the breaks, was taking various money shots, so there may well be a pictorial post with from an on-stage Paradise perspective coming this way soon . . .

Mini Orchestra = Spirit of The Pop Group?

Asalam alikum! The sun is out and its been burning up The Cube Orchestra:
ricjieliam
Perhaps this explains the VERY small turn out for Cube Orchestra on weds resulting in a volume excess, back in time, Punk Funk style explosion. I only turned up with a snare drum (My lovely New Brass/chrome Ludwig in case yer interested, no didn’t think so but tough here you go)
rich in drum
Gert lush innit.
Luckily I found a Bass drum and Tom, and later some used beer bottles, to add to my percussive output.
With Mark freaking on Sax, Hugh giving that bottom end what it needed and Young Liam putting down those angular riffs that are oh so popular these days it was roight New Wave. After our first freakout I commented how it reminded me of The PoP Group era,
Mark (right of picture)li markclaimed to have been there doing just such a thing with his band ‘The Big Thought’.

I actually got some mpeg4 of us which, if I can work out how, i’ll put up on here or on the archive.
<img src="http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/captainrichw/lensman.jpg" alt="hugh" lens markkk

Well we all enjoyed rocking out for a change, especially Mark, Guess its hard to rock on the sax without sounding like something god awful? Kenny G? The G stands for god awful apparently…………..

Till next time, Vegas tanned Richie Paradise.

Ps don’t forget MOVIEOKE this saturday.

Didn’t we have a lovely time

Monday, videoing for cut-up again, I went to the zoo with ( only recently ) former zoo employee Ben, probably best known to you from the Here shop . . .

zoo foxxed

He played thumb piano beside Biggie Smalls the giant Tortoise, Toy Piano by the dolphins and a roaring Godzilla figure ( from his extensive collection ) in the undergrowth near the avariy, but far enough away not to distrburb the birds. Ben let me into the various insider zoo knowledge as we made our way round with the aid of ice cream . . . all in all a splendid day out !

In the evening I went to The Cube to see the replacement re-score of Kung-Fu Hustle, by Depth Charge ( with new music and subtitles ).

Last time he had failed to render his DVD in time. This time he made it, still last minute, though. It was greatly enjoyable, though I felt not hugely enhancing the already enjoyable experience of seeing the film straight – I reckon it would have been better as a rescore if it had been done live, or at least included a live element . . .

. . . changing the subtitles is a good use of writable DVD technology in my ( colour-coded ) book, but wacking new sound on that isn’t ( or doesn’t need to be ) really hyper precise seems to loose some of what can be good about a good live ( including live cued, i.e. dj’ed ) film rescore to me ( bit like the old DAT tape thing for electronic “performers” ) . . . however, it definitely was great to see and did have some nice touches in JSK’s additions and subtractions.

Tuesday, amongst various runnings around I got to get to Got Giddy – not at the Cube, but at The Thelka ( but with Chiz, Mark, Jem and Rod involved it was still fairly cube shaped ).

I missed Freeze Puppy and Black Mountain ( who don’t, I don’t think, own www.blackmountain.co.uk ) , but got there in time to see headliner Jamie Lidell perform with VJ ( and renowned Graf artist ) Pablo Fiasco, giving Rod’s video mixer quite a hammering.

Mr Lidell really did make the most of it being live – theatrics via souped up singing, beatboxing and various other vocalisations, plus ingenious use of live sampling had everyone dancing into the night most unlike your usual Tuesday . . . and as an added celebrity bonus you could spot Chris Morris in the audience in voluminous bermuda shorts and shirt.

Joe Grounds recreating Laura on the Venn door, in the style of an elederly french woman . . . ( I think that's what he said )

For the encore someone called Tim was called up on stage ( not Mr Tim as several thought, including him, for a moment ) for a beatbox / scratch battle with Pablo Fiasco, who was literally scratching the surface of the record like a washboard. Jamie, who said he didn’t have any songs left, ended with a monster of a tune which was at times very silly ( seemed almost similar to Weive Stonder‘s ‘Ton Wah’ ) but also completely full-on with occasional blasts of bass that shook the whole boat, plus insane breakdowns drops and comebacks. All backed by excellent old school video mixing. Hilarious and seriously masterful.

I smiled all night, Thanks Qu Junckions.

Movieoke June Poster

Coming to a cinema near you . . .

Where was I, Venn . . .

Previously on the late Venn report . . .

I left you last as the Orchestra Cube entered the Malcolm X to bewilderment and astonishment. Jesse, in the bird head, conducted using Peter’s signs. Not on stage as planned, but in front of it, and the smooth DJ transition had to have a rethink too. While the tech guys sorted the decks Chiz, Jem and I played sneakers snap . . .

It's a draw. Again !

First band on after the Orchestra were The John E. Vistic Experience who were on the same bill as when I did The Computer Sings supporting Kid Carpet for Blowpop. Nice people, but I thought English people singing in American accents was out of bounds rule 101 . . . I might be missing something but I don’t really get them.

To the djing – I was going to play off my mp3 player on random – out of bounds rule 102, I think, something I normally would never do – and so found very appealing. Chiz and I agreed it was very Venn on testing it. However after hearing the sound system the night before I just had to pack up a couple of crates of vinyl – if only to hear the more recent Grime Dubs type stuff at immense volume. Most enjoyable for me was playing local lads DJ Pinch & P Dutty’s War Dub, the effect of whose bass my brother likened to “being miniaturised and hit with 10 power showers”, into and over another view of ‘urban’ decay Morrissey‘s striped down version of The Jam’s ‘That’s Entertainment‘ ( with a non-hammy Vic Reeves on backing vocals, fact fans. ) Random, but not Random.

After me was The Warsaw Village Band – pretty amazing, as well documented elsewhere, even if there was a lot of talking over them ( which has also been already noted ).

Venn general Saturday extravaganza in the X

Super Furry Animals were Djing next – as they were going to be using the only decks in the building we needed a transition, and all there was was the sound desk’s single CD player. I hadn’t brought a vast selection of CDs, but was called upon to improvise . . . first off we played my Computer Sings CD ( v.2.5 ) which went down surprisingly well – apparently some people thought it was the SFA and they like it too. I liked them too, no real mixing to speak of, but playing some great weird Welsh psychedelic 7″s with fantastic sleeves [btw, a comp of similar stuff available here ], as well as more familiar but fun party stuff.

Back on the single CD deck I had a idea, which ( like the mp3 player before ) seemed so wrong it had to be right . . . play the whole of Doolittle. I’ve seen it listed as a festival highlight and lowlight ( I heard more reports as highlight tho, and I thought it worked well myself, especially the moment when Debaser finished and Tame started and you could see people stop for moment and think “What! You’re not allowed to do that . . . but hang on . . . this is GREAT!” )

After the Pixies, there was more amazing frantic rock care of Oneida ( who don’t, I don’t think, own www.oneida.com ).

As Rod had to go and pack down some of the other venues, I took over VJ duty, with help from my brother ( who also does editing work ) – which was greatly enjoyable.

Again, as documented elsewhere, the band were amazing – featuring an incredible, and incredibly fast, drummer. They also toyed with the out-of-bounds rules finishing with a sustained repeated riff which enraged some but delighted many more open minded Venners.

Venners?

Bridging the gap between them and Dj Rupture was another whole cd – Original Jamaican Sound System Style, which as a compiled CD was far less controversial, or even noticed, despite being exactly the same “playing other people’s records” process really . . .

In the more usual performance end of that spectrum DJ Rupture‘s 3 deck mixing was great – the place was suddenly like a super-skewed-club. I don’t know what he thinks now, but at the time Chiz seemed to think it was the best thing he’d ever seen, and was keen to get him back for future Venns, in a Sonar / Jeff Mills kind of style.

Venn Venn Venn

I was having such a great time that I really wasn’t that bothered when my iriver got lost or stolen, despite, as Ed said, it possessing of a “very high £s to square cms ratio” .

It was an expensive evening, but an extremely enjoyable one.

My brother and I arrived back around 6 for a few hours kip before taking a Venn break in the form of heading off for our Grandparents’ 70th wedding anniversary . . .

We were back for ( some ) of the final festivities at Trinity in the evening. We missed Tunng, although at the family do it turned out that my second cousin ( that’s my mum’s cousin ), who used to be in cult 70’s band Gryphon, teaches one of them guitar. Anyway . . .

We re-entered Venn to lovely, but unfortunately final, strains of Minotaur Shock and met an almost barely there Chiz . . .

Blind Chizzy Williams [ left ]

. . . whiskey soaked and smiling ( he said he tried all the drugs, but it turned out alcohol worked best ) , and obviously relieved that the end of the main phase of super organisational stress was in sight.

Taking Chiz’s lead we forewent the usual Red Stripes in favour of Jack Daniel’s and happily soaked up the mostly country and folk sounds of ( cut’n’pasted from the webpage ) Vetiver featuring Andy Cabic, Alissa Anderson, Devendra Banhart, Kevin Barker and Otto Hauser; Micah P Hinson and Currituck & co . . .

All a bit of a beautiful blur to be honest, I know my bro bought the Micah P Hinson CD, who were the rockiest of the evening, quite pixiesesque at times, in fact.

I think my Sunday highlight was Jem looking small. An improbable feat by standing next to Mark Stewart ( in the pic above, though it doesn’t really capture it ).

As I remember, everything gently came to a close, Jem wrapped up with thanks to much applause, and everyone contentedly trundled out, or started packing up with a deserved sense of achievement.

The next day I saw Liam ( Orchestra Cube ) filming with University of Bristol Film School students in the bearpit . . .

nice use of a wheelchair for tracking shots !

. . . for a video for local band Fortune Drive. He / they work faster then me – I saw it and various other great videoes directed by Liam at his ‘Mixtape‘ night on Wednesday at the Student’s Union where The Computer Sings did a performance.

My cutting up filming continues – I’ll rush just rush through . . .

I reshot with Jay Le Surgeon, then videoed extraordinary typewriter artist Keira Lyn Rathbone . . .

That's in the cave under the camera obsura, after failed attempts to find the one on the other side . . .

. . . one of the very few who answered my poster, rather than was asked by me.

Next Paula ( formerly of Mooz ) on Cello . . .

Cello, cello, cello

. . . in Arnos Vale Cemetery who produced some really wonderful sounds for me to mess with . . .

Followed by a visit to the Here shop to see the 24 hour knit exhibition . . .

it's a knit ting

. . . and Camilla on the needles ( also for the cut-up ) . . .

knitting to the beat

. . . and finally, that The Boy Lucas on drums under, and inside a bridge . . .

the top shot was difficult to capture on video because of the contrast of the bright background - looked amazing when we were there though . . .

. . . again, providing some stunning stuff. Big thank you to all cut-uppers.

Right we’re pretty much up to date now. Tonight as I write there’s an opening as Spike Island tonight ( Friday 17th June, 7.30 to 9.30 ).

It features a “virtual submarine” with a periscope through which you can view artists’ work ( mine included ) care of German group The Office of Subversive Architecture.

My thing is a selection from the ongoing series of images using the environment as a tripod – you know those upwards photographs and will be accompanied by the song that inspired them.

I personally plan an early appearance followed by Double Bogey at The Cube after . . .

I know that’s not much of an early warning – but I’ll give you all a week’s head start to get in gear for June’s Movieoke on the 25th . . .
