Movieoke + Cube away fixture AGAIN

Huge apologies but anyway I finally managed to get a picture of Max Blackout onto my computer:
max blackout

Once again to reiterate, MOVIEOKE WAS FANTASTIC.

Orchestra Cube were, in their own way, also fantastic at The Fleece. A fighting testament to ecleticism and invention all in the name of finding ‘it’ daddio.
Here’s Young Liam rocking out;

Couldn’t decide which one I liked most.

Where would we have been without Mark’s Sax appeal and Westcountry burr?

Feeling horny? (sorry)
The Cube has its ladies of Hip Hop and here are a couple of the Orchestra Ladies of Horn, Helen on flute and Belinda on trumpet;

A most interesting night that started a huge online debate amongst Orchestra members about the very nature of what we are trying to do, how we do it and possibly the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything too (whilst we’re at it).

Till next time,

Venn Sat

Saturday Venn started for me with the end of the demo derby at The Cube . . .

panelling

Apparently, Jonno later told me ( hosting and on the far left ), for the first few tracks the monitors had all been facing away from the panel, not necessarily conducive for fair appraisal . . !

Another, sort of arbitrary factor was only playing parts of longer tracks – something picked up on the Choke forum where a basis away from electronica was noted. Also , rather harshly, posted there was that Motorboy ( Jonno ) and ‘Ladyboy’ ( Lazerboy ) were a “pair of Nathan Barleys”, and “The guy second from right looked, talked and acted like Dan Ashcroft”.

As a sidenote, I think there’s a lot less sunglasses wearing than usual despite the bright June weather, which may be due to the fear of being labelled a Barley – if only the ridiculous News presentation had reacted like that post On The Hour and <a href="The Day Today, rather than people moderating harmless ridiculous fun . . . anyway, I don’t know who the ‘Dan Ashcroft’ fella is, though he does respond in the forum which is worth going through for a range of perspectives before it strangely turns into a caps & hoodies debate (!?).

The person in the middle is Dave Howell of Fat Cat Records, I don’t know who’s on the far right. In their summing up they said the standard of submissions was impressively high. I did catch the favoured track of the panel which was a gorgeous improvised piece by a young brother and sister duo.

Chiz had been cueing the tracks, and he and Esther said they’d heard me on Venn radio that morning, which was news to me – turned out it was part of Ali’s interviews with Cube volunteers about this whole Cube business . . .

Meanwhile on Venn radio at this point was Jim Backhouse and Magz Hall
from Resonance Fm . . .

The 'real' radio station, in the cube's green room

. . . with bow-tied birthday boy Jesse Morningstar.

That was backstage in the Cube’s ‘green room’. The next stage was to bring out a faux radio station on stage – though faux it was broadcast from. What I mean is there was a fun backdrop . . .

wheeling on the cardboard wonders

. . . possibly influenced by the old Patrick Joyce constructed S&H stage props, though with a more fun wobbly b-movie / old school Doctor Who feel.

The set up took a while, and Dotty Girl ( of Chiz & Esther ) keep inquisitively climbing the stairs between busting some fresh moves on the floor.

still setting up

The radio continued from the green room, but with so many performers in the place space was at a premium. There was a string quartet ( minus 1 ) practising in the office . . .

That's Team Brick on the right

. . . and my brother arrived from London, so we popped back to mine to drop off his stuff and met Chani and Lady on the way . . .

the windy city

. . . Lady on the way to Dj Relay with Jay Le Surgeon, TuKatz, Randek and Spanner Magic, apparently going venue to venue on a tandem – something I sadly have no pictures of.

Mark and I headed back to the Cube and caught a really brilliant performance, barely marred by a bit of an initially dodgy audio mix, of Joy Division’s ‘Transmission’ by Rasha Shaheen and Emily Breeze that reminded me of P.J. Harvey and Bjork’s take on ‘Satisfaction’ . . .

at the brit awards

There were loads of artists performing great stuff in the radio circus – SJ Esau, Joe Volk, The Max Milton Quartet, Mole Harness, Joe Grounds, Ducan Fleming ( reading a story in a blinding white shellsuit ) to name a few. These had various filmic interpersions that worked well in the auditoruim ( not sure about how it sounded on the radio )
. . .

Joe Grounds on saw on the left

. . . I think the main highlight for us was Team Brick’s incredible feral vocalisations (pictured a few pictures up next to the strings . . . ).

I missed some of the performances as I went backstage with the other Orchestra Cube members . . .

backstage with the bird

Lead by Jesse in a bird head ( my brother thought it was a penguin, but I thought more likely a magpie ) the Orchestra was to burst on stage and then burst out of The Cube taking the audience with us as we made our way to the Malcolm X centre.

I didn’t feel the bursting on was as dramatic as it could have been – for the march we all had portable instruments so didn’t compete that well with the previously amplified stuff on stage, however the number of performers and genuine strangeness was on our side . . .

That's me on the mini turntable in the middle

The procession perturbed various passer-bys, including inciting one bizarre heckle of ”go to church” by someone who later on was seen rummaging through the stuff left for the charity shop opposite the Salvation army – pure Stokes Croft magic. Without Richie the rhythm was somewhat lacking which bothered me a first, but I then came to enjoy the peculiar amorphous twists and turns.

The entrance to the Malcolm X Centre, after a brief standing performance on the steps, had the bar staffs’ jaws on the floor in confusion.

The plan had been that I would take the record I’d been using off the portable and onto the decks as a transition, but as it happened the system wasn’t ready. Still the Orchestra played in the building conducted by the bird creature using Peter’s hand sign repertoire.

I think I’ll continue into the evening’s events in yet another post . . .

Back in 10

So, don’t you just hate it when something’s regularly updated, slowly you realise it not so regular, and then you have to wait 10 days before something appears. Me too, so sorry about that.

Have no fear though, The Cube abides, I just haven’t been there ( much ).

I’m wrapped up in the Cut-up – it’s the final throws of both collecting the footage and building an edit machine to start the next stage . . . plus I’m peering at the screen through a lattice of delightful eye grot as the hayfever season is finally upon us, which also leaves me with a mind feeling like it’s encased in cotton wool, whatever drug combo I use ( Chiz knows what I’m talking about ).

Last time I was at The Cube was for Venn – it seems almost comical to do a Venn report this late, there have been so many ( my favourite so far being DJ Rupture’s ( may need to scroll ! ) which includes reviews of music heard from cars and mentions of Scotland’s most popular caffeinated drink. ).

Anyway, I’ll give it a go, using my photos as a memory trigger . . .

So first off going way back to the day before, everyone was rushing around . . .

bugs, boy ( gHost ) and beam head honcho

Returning from one of many trips to Target electronics re: building a video editing machine I popped in on Patrick who is now lodging with Hogge and the kids. Pat wasn’t there, but Hogge showed off his impressive array of analogue equipment . . .

The Analord

I recorded one of his tracks to my iRiver to play in my set for Venn on Saturday at the Malcolm X Centre. Hogge was also getting ready to perform, at Black Out Sound Cinema at The Cube, also on Saturday.

Opposite their house was some graf by Sums, put up specifically for Jane Porter’s Relay – “An audio walking tour of Stokes Croft, featuring artists whose work can be seen on the walls, pavements, galleries and studios of the area.”

That's a piece on board glued to the wall

That piece is no longer there – there were also similar ones above the back door of The Cube which have also gone.

I helped Jane with the editing of the audio for ‘Relay’, halving Emma Canton’s, Heath’s and Rowdy’s talks by removing the ums and ers, plus providing text-to-speech for “the elusive” Banksy.

The next morning, Venn Friday, on another trip down Cherry Lane Aaron did his green cross code man impression . . .

Cross, Lord Vader

. . . on his way to get flyers printed ( by the way, Mark, if you’re reading where are the various flyers and posters for the archive here . . ? )

After preparing my Saturday set I ventured forth to the preview of ‘Relay’ which was presented as the Venn opener, but not unlike many a Here shop preview ( but thankfully unlike all Venn events to follow ), was rather sparsely populated . . . Jane herself had rather flustedly phoned to say she would be an hour late as she was having trouble with the mp3 players that walkers hire to hear the tour . . .

she'll get here . . .

and, only a bit later she did arrive . . .

Beer, Here

There was only one mp3 player ( rather than the proposed 5 ) for the preview, but the content, poster and pamphlet were all very impressive.

‘Relay’ is an ongoing project and I highly recommend popping into the Here shop if you haven’t experienced it yet . . .

The people there – mostly artists involved, took turns to try it out. I went to The Cube to check out WSSK talking about their piece on the back of the Cube that was commissioned by Thames & Hudson for Tristan Manco’s ‘Stencil Logos’ book launch. It was strange to hear Lady and Hogge talk about The Cube on the player and have them appear.

Inside The Cube Radio Venn was in full swing with Rasha and Joe Volk doing a plug58 show, which we’d been listening to on the Here shop’s radio just before. In the last minute spirit Rasha hadn’t received my mp3 indents in time, but I managed to get them to her in time her next one.

Going via the Here shop Rasha, her Sister, Joe and I went for a drink in another Venn venue, The Pipe and Slippers . . .

Sorry I can't remember Rasha's sister's name, but I do remember this was her first drink in her trip here. . . . not Rasha's tho ! : )

. . . before moving on to the Malcolm X Centre, and it’s familiar looking door staff . . .

come on in . . .

. . . into the almighty sonic onslaught of Acid Mothers Temple And The Cosmic Inferno. On the stairs and up the stairs their were further familiar faces . . .

Venn Wear

Thankfully it was busy, and there was a real festival feel that may be hard to comprehend if you weren’t there. Maybe it was the wristbands., Maybe it was the money – the no-Friday- guestlist policy, plus the fact that my 2 performances were on Saturday ( doh! ) meant it was a bit pricey for stingy ole ( well Cubical spoiled ) me, though definitely a reasonable price for what you got from any reasonable angle. The standard £2.50-for-a-can-of-Red Stripe may also added to the Festival feel. More likely it was the attention to detail of all those involved, things like the consistency of the visuals across the venues giving a unified feel – Rod was doing a grand job . . .

venn our eyes met

Headliner Mark Stewart . . .

he's a big fella

. . . blew many away more than me. It was good – hearing that ‘Good Times” riff (re)played by members of the original Sugarhill House band has to be pretty special, and the whole paranoid punk funk dub thing is undeniable current with Simon Reynolds’ book, the Soul Jazz comp, and DFA et al ( sic ), but I got the feeling I would have got more if I’d been around the first time round, rather than know of him second hand via those who cited him as a influence.

There were a lot of people there I presume did know him from the first time round and that range of ages also added to that diverse festival, urm, can I say ‘feel’ again?

I enjoyed Adrian Sherwood’s masterful dub interventions, though I heard some people didn’t appreciate the extreme so much and thought he was overdoing it on the desk, but I definitely disagree – I also heard that he kept asking Chiz “Does it sound alright?”, which is sweeter than Kate’s Feral Trade if true.

Right, well, I’m running out of space and time here so I’ll come back later with tales of Saturday . . .

Orchestra Cube not in Cube and others

Sunday saw an out of cinema performance by Orchestra Cube. Sadly I wasn’t there as I was aiding Jane from the Here shop with editting for her audio tour of art ( mostly graf ) in Stokes Croft, which will feature at Venn.

So, I missed the Orchestra at The Greatness at The Fleece and Firkin but here are some random quotes from the email list to get a flavour . . .

Anthony :

a couple of friends in the audience sunday said good things. said it was exciting. and that they enjoyed following the differant shifts and strands within the music! so that’s not all bad. unfortunately my improvised and i thought, rather drole rap on Bank holiday theme did not come across at all audibly. my toasting days are over.

Richie :

had a good chat with Gary about te gig, felt we started too freneticaly but managed to get our heads around it later and got ‘there’ at times, ended ona good un.

Richie also mentioned a possible update hereabouts with phone pics, so keep peeping the posts. . .

On Sunday afternoon I videoed Orchestra Cube Member Unai Requejo . . .

That's Uani

. . . for my Cut-Up project. [ I feel justified in mentioning my persional project at every moment as it invovles many cubers and is to be initially screened there / here . . . ]

Language was a bit of a barrier with Unai – or rather it should have been . . . this is how he describes himself on the Orchestra Members list . . .

Unai Requejo :: Guitar
From Bilbao.

web site: http://www.euskalnet.net/dizdiz

. . . which to my shame I have no hope of deciphering, however – mostly through facial expressions, and a shared love of filming and fun – he obviously knew exactly what I was after and played great on his strange little guitar with in-built amp plus a beautiful bit of trumpet in, what he called in an email, the ‘pedestrian passages’ . . .

'' ''

Then on monday I videoed Lisa Cupcake at the Here shop playing toy piano and Stylophone in ever stylish red and black.. . .

closed - but she's got the keys . . .

The Orchestra is playing on Saturday at Venn, and Jane’s audio tour project is launched on the Friday 6pm at the Here shop – so maybe see you there . . .

Movieoke ok

Well, we did it!

Not many pics ( care of me ) . . .

where's max

[EDIT: now parachuting in from 2016, extra images from the night come c/o Martin Poulter and archive.org – mr_h ]

. . . as me and Hog were cordoned off in the soundproofed projection room – but even there we could hear the loudest of the joyful whooping and hollering. It was weird and not a little stressful being in this slight remove booth, but by all accounts it went smooth and the already ample and eager attendance looks set to expand in coming months.

A couple of DVDs without subtitles was the biggest hitch ( that all came together in a cluster ! ) , that and not offering specific scenes, just films which almost lead to a terrible faux pas when Hog was asked to find ”any scene from ‘Thelma and Lousie’” clicked on what looked like any random road scene but turned out to be the precursor to a rape scene . . . so almost nearly could have really messed up all the good natured fun of the evening – good natured fun that involved several graphic zombie films, mind . . . as well as Snow White and Carry On Camping.

here's max

I’ve been re-researching Max Headroom, and harvesting various quips and witticisms – however Max Blackout in this role basically consisted of coming on, mostly fairly wordlessly or shouting a bit of mock abuse, to stop each performance going on too long. Tom did the main host’s role, and there was a bit of banter between us which I think it worked well – hard to really tell from that aforementioned remove.

here's max

Tom did a great job generally but the real stars ( as well as the audience participants ) were undoubtedly Colin & Richie who were just extraordinary, able to play anything at any moment, even though this was the first time they had even met!

Lessons from this first outing include :

check all DVDs for subtitles before including them on the Menu.

Include a choice of scenes, not a choice of films.

Start the band before the scene ( for smoothness ).

It could be possible to have an audio feed to Colin so he can hear a bit of the film’s music – there was funny, but unintentional delays between the music and the subtitles for ‘Singin’ In the Rain’ and ‘Heigh-ho!’ from ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ – and for some he didn’t know the orginal melody ( though always filled with something good ! ).

here's the dwarves

A louder audio monitor from the stage would have been good for me – but only would have added to the stress of the multitasking Hog. Also a visual monitor from a live camera feed would be really good and some sort of mic-ing of the audience, but there was already 3 cameras in the complex Max vision mixing setup, which I really should have taken a picture of !

Anyway, though, all in all a success for The Cube and a strong foundation for fun to come.

Ed & Joe Show

Yesterday I videoed Louisa in her Scratch pad ( sorry no stills ) and then rushed on to The Cube to setup the technicals for Movieoke with Rod and Tom – little bit worried about it from my perspective as for this first one Max in going to have to be installed in the projector room.

This means being somewhat removed from the audience for ad-libbing / judging timing . . . However, hopefully there will be a loop from the stage so I can hear Richie & Colin, and Tom who will be the ‘human’ host, plus maybe a bit of audience spill . . .

Visuals seemed sussed tho . . .

Max will be wearing white suit and hat to prevent that weird hair loss !

I then went on to the Watershed to check out Cinéformation about “Film as Art”. The last piece show had a live improv soundtrack from Ale of the Orchestra Cube fame and accomplice.

I came back via The Cube to pick up my Camera and Tripod for today’s filming, but Indymedia wasn’t as hard rocking as I had expected and was so it was all locked up.

Back this morning I picked it up and met Educated Ed in the office where Hogge was sweeping, Chani bottling up and Heath computing.

A barefoot Ed drove me to The Holmes on the Bristol University Campus where he lived when studying with a plan to make vocal noises inside a natural chamber in the side of a massive 1000 year old Oak, as well as playing 78s on his gramophone . . .

Ivor Cutler was on the in car entertainment system

However when we got there the area was cordoned off. We went to search out the porter who Ed knew old boy style, but it turned out he was no longer there. His replacement was very helpful, and bizarrely turned out to have been in the first year on the same course as me when I was studying Art and was in my third year ( not in Bristol ).

He informed us the mighty oak had fallen. We decided to film there never-the-less . . .

all good in the wood ?

Parts of the old oak remained housing various, what I understand have now to be called “minibeasts“. The area generally is being made into botanical gardens – I’m sure there’s information to had about it here somewhere, but I haven’t searched heavily.

Ed made some extraordinary noises and we packed up to go back to his house, with the notion of possibly videoing Joe too. When we got there Joe . . .

y'ello

. . . was busy ( thinking about ) designing some sandpaper based invitations, but I did eventually end up videoing him too on his Technics E55 organ.

As I write The Greatness proceeds . . .

Orchestral Colour Box

Like Mr. Hopkinson said, we tried playing colours this time and I fear I was stuck in teacher mode and got us to do something instead of TOO MUCH CHATTER (see me after practise Hopkinson). Talking of Mr H:
Mr Hopkinson
You can just see the legs of Tiny Tim and Ale’s head. Ale was a demon on the Tabla by the way.
I had my first go at orchestrating, which is really odd but occasionally you create something quite beautiful like the great thing the horns were doing which was fantastic. If you fancy trying then come along.
Cube horns

The recent story about that guy who couldn’t remember who he was but could play ‘authentic’ music on a piano inspired a very chilled out piece that developed very organically and ended in a very authentic way. Question is, would medical experts describe our music as ‘authentic’? Answers ona postcard please…………
marcus liam stew

Sunday sees the first away fixture for Orchestra Cube at The Fleece & Firkin, its a night of Orchestras organised by Jesse, it would be nice to see you there.

Ciao for now,

Cuts, Bugs, Cube, Orch and Haack

Ok, well ( too many ) things keep happening, but I keep failing to document them – always the way when there’s stuff to write about you’re too busy doing it to write about it etc . . . I may get time to fill in the recent gap, I may not . . . anyway, today . . .

Today I videoed Tom Bugs . . .

Outside the deaf centre - as we finished a man came out and said ''Candid Cameral, is it''

. . . for my Cut-up project. By the way, that pic is taken with my new backup camera, in use while my usual one is off for it’s 3rd repair !

Coming to video Tom, carrying camera bag and tripod for that, and going on directly to the Orchestra, carrying CDJ Deck and Kaoss pad for that ( plus the usual stills camera and mp3 player ) , I was rather overloaded. However, due to an email misunderstanding I arrived half an hour late for the orchestra and all the Amps were taken, so never got a chance to use the deck but took the opportunity to record some video of the proceedings.

round and round

There seemed to be more attendees than in recent weeks. Everyone was formed in a circle, but ( while I was there at least ) there was direction – mainly from Rich and Ali’s direction ( pictured on the far left on the right hand pic above ).

Various methods were employed, including playing colours – first everyone played “red” and then “green”, then multi-coloured where each player was assigned their own colour leading to faux Reservoir Dogs squabbles possibly prescient of Movieoke.

I recorded some audio onto my mp3 player before I left, and though distorted, really enjoyed it as I lugged my stuff back.

I was meant to be making a DVD archive copy of the Sky Captain rescore with Jem in the evening, but an email from Tom had alerted me to the Bruce Haack film that was showing that evening – something I had been blissfully unaware was happening even though I originally suggested the Cube show it !

So I saw Tom again, this time on stage . . .

Enthused like a Johnny Ball for the 00's

. . . demonstrating his bug brand stylings as part of the “inventor’s night” support for the film. This also included a shot, mostly wordless play about invention and ideas. It was all good, tho the audience was rather sparse – I don’t think it was advertised much though and it was a Wednesday . . . People were asked to bring their own inventions, the most prominent being S.J.Esau‘s noise drowning machine . . .

. . . which made a constant loud noise.

Jem didn’t turn up for the film ( he missed a treat ) generally right now there’s a lot of rushing around, mainly Venn related. Tomorrow as I write ( though not necessarily post ) I’m due to video Diss Miss and will be going through the complex video intricacies for Movieoke Set-up with Rod – might even make it to the Watershed’s Cinéformation: Film as Art in the evening . . .

Surfs Up again and Movieoke plug on Radio 2

Had an odd experience tonight when I correctly guessed a record on Mark Radcliffe’s very good R2 show. The tune was Dick Dale & His Dale Tones playing Miserlou, which was a track I played on saturday at The Cube’s surf night, spooky.
Dick Dale

Spookier still is Mark asked me a few questions about my showbizness name (which is when I plugged MOVIEOKE , THE CUBE and ORCHESTRA CUBE) but I forgot to mention to him that I got the name from Jack Kerouac’s ‘On The Road’, the main character being Sal Paradise, which was the book being reviewed by Will Self about 10 years ago when I last won a competiton on The Mark Radcliffe show………

Anyway if yer interested in my 5 mins of fame and The Cube getting plugged then go here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/radcliffe/
and click on tuesday on the play again button

[ mr-h edit : I’ve mp3’ed the exact moment which you can stream here ( .m3u file ) or download here ( .mp3 file – 1.73mb ) ]

I think The Cube is beginning to take over my life (or is it The Matrix?),

Hope to see you saturday,

Richie Paradise
